Axiomtek Unveils Medical-Grade Touch LCD Monitor

Axiomtek has introduced a 22in (56cm) TFT medical-grade touch LCD monitor. The MMT225, which is especially designed for the medical environment, adopts an IPX1 waterproof design that protects the system from outside liquid, preventing the system from crashing. The fanless unit is 69mm thick and is outfitted with 22in TFT 300 nits, a WSXGA LCD display and an OSD to facilitate viewing quality and data entry.

The MMT225 is suitable for medical image processing and mobile nursing carts. It complies with UL60601-1/EN60601-1, CE and FCC Class B certifications. The MMT225 offers excellent fanless operation and a long lifecycle under any severe condition, according to the company. To protect the unit from outside damage, the MMT225 adopts IP65 front-panel and IPX1 system spill-/dust-proof designs. By supporting a lock-type medical adaptor plug, this slim medical-grade monitor is suitable for a variety of harsh environments.

The high-brightness display also incorporates the multi-signal inputs of VGA, S-video, video, DVI, audio-in and three USB ports (one slave and two hosts) to connect with a range of medical equipment. Its optional 1.3-megapixel camera and built-in microphone/2W stereo speakers enable remote communication. Bluetooth is available as an option for wireless connection with medical peripheral devices.

Axiomtek claims that the optional radio-frequency identification offers an efficient way to validate patient identification and give proper treatment. The RoHS-compliant MMT225 will be available in mid-March 2010.

Power Supply Monitor Manages DC/DC Converters

Linear Technology has introduced the LTC2978 power supply monitor and controller for digital management of up to eight 0-6V power supplies. Configuring multiple DC/DC converters in an already complex system can be a complicated design task when using passive components. Values defined by external trim resistors and capacitors such as start-up time, set point value or switching frequency make a system inflexible.

To alleviate these issues, digital control over analogue power suppliers has allowed for quick adjustment of output voltages and precise protection, monitoring and diagnostic mechanisms. The LTC2978's PMBus-compliant interface provides easy access to an on-board EEPROM, giving users supply configuration, fault response and logging capabilities.

In addition, an array of supervising, margining and sequencing functions make the LTC2978 an all-in-one digital power management solution, simplifying the design challenges and reducing the component count typical of traditional analogue control. Linear Technology said the LTC2978 provides numerous functions with on-the-fly adjustments that make it suitable for digital power control in a variety of automotive, medical and telecommunication applications. An integrated 15-bit ADC and 9:1 ADC MUX allows the IC to accurately monitor and servo eight output channels and one input channel.

The primary PMBus operations include sequencing the start-up of supplies, adjusting point-of-load voltages using voltage-buffered 10-bit current output digital-to-analogue converters (IDACs), margining voltages to programmed limits and supervising output voltages, as well as the LTC2978's die temperature, for overvalue or undervalue conditions. The configuration settings of these operations are user-programmable and can be stored in EEPROM, along with any faults, allowing for discontinuous system use.

A programmable watchdog timer is also provided to supervise an external microcontroller, FPGA or ASIC. For applications that monitor more than eight supplies, the LTC2978 can be cascaded using only two connections. This high level of mixed-signal integration ensures that the LTC2978 can reliably manage complicated power supply systems with ease, according to Linear Technology. The LTC2978 is available in a 64-lead 9 x 9mm QFN package that is RoHS compliant, and is specified over the commercial and industrial temperature ranges.

Fleet Monitor Tracks Excessive Speed And Idling

Mentor Engineering has introduced a fleet monitoring service that tracks excessive speed and idling to reduce fuel costs, minimise accident liability risks and improve driver habits. The Mentor Fleet Monitor is a comprehensive service that provides enhanced vehicle monitoring capabilities. Vehicles that speed or idle unnecessarily can drive up operating costs.

A US Environmental Protection Agency study reported that trucks left idling for long periods of time waste approximately 960 million gallons of diesel fuel each year. According to the US Department of Transportation, an average truck burns 0.9 gallons of fuel per hour idling. By tracking and controlling driver speed behaviour, a company can reduce accidents, according to Mentor. When a speed or idling event occurs, data is sent from the in-vehicle mobile computer to a server, hosted by Mentor, where speed and idling reports are created for the client.

Using this information, clients can identify at-risk drivers and develop training programmes to encourage safer driving practices and to reduce fuel costs. With the fleet monitoring service, clients can customise the speed and idling reports desired for each vehicle in their fleet. After choosing which reports they want and how often they want them generated, the client receives the reports automatically via email and can view the precise location of each speed or idling event on a satellite map for an additional layer of tracking accuracy and context.

Mike Koebel, vice-president of sales and business development at Mentor, said: 'With the ability to track when and where vehicles exceed a speed threshold and reducing the avoidable idling of vehicles, clients can encourage better driver behaviour and see real fuel savings. 'Monitoring vehicle idling also provides another way to support green initiatives,' he added.

Insertion Probes Monitor Bioproduction Process

Stratophase has collaborated with the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) to develop an insertion probe variant of its Spectrosens system. Enabling real-time monitoring of the bioproduction fermentation process, the multi-output Spectrosens insertion probes track compositional changes and monitor temperature in the liquid.

Multiple discrete readings can be taken simultaneously at numerous locations, providing more reliable measurements and a reduced chance of false positives. As a result, the entire fermentation process can be precisely monitored to ensure reproducibility and clear determination of the desired end-point. The Spectrosens system sensors can be placed throughout the production process and networked via the control and analysis unit.

Using only light at the point of measurement, the sensors are intrinsically safe and spark free, removing any chances of ignition. The insertion probe fits standard ports for dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH probes, enabling ultra-high resolution, optical microchip technology to be applied to existing benchtop and large-scale bioreactor equipment. Other tried and tested applications of the Spectrosens insertion probe include biofuel production and sustainable polymer development. The probe system is currently being trialled at the UK's National Industrial Biotechnology Facility (NIBF).

Thin Film-Based Gauges Monitor Local Environments

Reynard, a supplier of optical components and custom thin-film coatings, has introduced thin film-based environmental gauges. Thin film-based environmental gauges are manufactured by depositing environmentally susceptible coating materials onto an inert substrate. Coating materials are typically deposited in a custom-defined quasi-grid pattern of lines.

Redundant traces, matched in length and size, can be implemented to monitor environmental changes over a small region, such as for rising gas or fluid conditions, or to provide damage protection when used in abrasive conditions. Unmatched lines allow for the variable open-space monitoring of growing corrosion levels, or for the monitoring of different types of corrosive elements.

Grid configurations are designed for specific operational environments and can utilise a combination of matched and unmatched lines to achieve the required electrical characteristics. The detection of environmental-caused degradation is accomplished by monitoring the change in electrical characteristics from one side, or zone, of the environmental gauge to another.

Photolithography techniques are utilised to achieve repeatable, high-precision transmission characteristics in confined areas. Materials such as copper, silver, aluminium, iron and zinc are commonly used for these lines, although other materials, or dopants, required for specific applications can also be deposited.

Traces can be added to most substrate types, even to flexible substrates such as MelinexR. Reynard's thin-film engineers will work closely with customers to ensure key product characteristics are properly defined and the highest reliability product is delivered on-time.

AL-3 Monitor Optimises Analogue Signalling Devices

IFM Electronic has introduced the AL-3 monitor, which complements analogue signalling devices by allowing the user to set switchpoints and compare or combine values and scaling ranges. The AL-3 monitor is a programmable, two-channel analogue threshold relay with two inputs for analogue standard signals (0/4...20 mA).

It picks up the current signals on separate inputs, compares them with the set limit values and switches the outputs according to the set switching functions. The input signals can be scaled to the measuring range of the sensor or transmitter so the measured values are indicated on the front display corresponding to their physical unit.

The AL-3 features an output relay with changeover contact and a transistor output for each channel. The user can monitor values that exceed or fall below the limit values and window function. In the comparator operating mode, a differential pressure can, for example, be determined from the two input signals, monitored and provided as an analogue value.

Tyre Pressure Monitor Has All Wheels Covered

System includes precision aerospace pressure sensors, transmitters, receiver and all necessary mounting equipment in a carrying case. The Techmor TP-1 allows accurate measurement of tyre pressures while on the track or the road Outputting at 4Hz, the TP-1 provides a smooth datastream that makes subtle pressure variations on track visible. A transmitter mounted to each hub sends wireless messages to a single receiver mounted inside the car.

The pass-through titanium valve-stem sensor allows pressures to be checked and adjusted without removing hardware. Systems can be quickly installed on any standard Nascar hub and switched between wheel sets and cars with no extra equipment. Outputs are available in analogue, RS232 or CANbus. The system includes precision aerospace pressure sensors, transmitters, receiver and all necessary mounting equipment in a carrying case.

Monitor Keeps Watch Over Chain Systems

Renold has launched a new version of Smartlink, the innovative chain monitoring technology that can be installed and operated either by maintenance engineers or OEMs. Previous versions of Smartlink have had to be installed and monitored by Renold's own engineers limiting its use to larger projects.

Now Smartlink can be owned and operated by anyone, bringing the benefits of chain monitoring to a much wider range of applications. The new Smartlink devices are supplied already fitted to a section of chain; users simply install the new chain link and Smartlink is ready to go. The new Smarlink units are available for operation on 1, 1.25 and 1.5in pitch chains. They are remotely controlled with a choice of two handheld devices, providing users with two levels of sophistication.

The simpler of the two handheld controllers is no bigger than a keyfob and enables Smartlink to be operated as an overload detector. In this instance Smartlink will provide a warning when chain exceeds a predetermined load enabling engineers to check machinery and make sure that it is safe to continue operating the system. The alarm conditions on the Smartlink device can then be reset using the remote control.

A more sophisticated handheld controller is available that is capable of downloading much more detailed information from Smartlink about the nature of the stresses and loading the chain was subjected to during a given period of operation. The data can then be analysed on a PC to identify the exact location of load peaks in the drive system using software specially written by Renold.

These developments have been possible thanks, in part, to the availability of smaller PCBs and miniature batteries that were initially developed for high-grade military applications. These new batteries are so small that Renold's team were able to integrate them with the PCB itself so that they were no longer a component on the board, they became part of it.

Speaking of the new launch Renold's Marketing Communications Manager, David Turner, says: 'This launch represents a breakthrough in chain monitoring technology and brings the benefits of Smartlink to a much wider range of engineers'. 'The new Smartlink units provide a groundbreaking opportunity to understand system loads which may be detrimental to the performance of a product or the operation of machinery'.

Flowmeters Monitor Waste Water

The Wells Sanitary District waste water treatment facility has installed four Optiflux electromagnetic flowmeters to monitor the flow of sludge at the treatment plant. The newly refurbished plant on the southern coast of Maine, USA treats up to 7.5 million litres of waste water per day. Engineering consultants redesigned many of the systems and processes at the facility and replaced all the existing electromagnetic flowmeters with Krohne's Optiflux instruments.

The Optiflux incorporates advanced measurement technology, which is highly accurate even when measuring substances with a high bubble or solid content or where there is turbulent flow. The flowmeters installed at Wells Sanitary District are being used to measure sludge recirculation and monitor the amount of effluent that is treated.

In the sludge recirculation area, which forms part of the of the facility's in-line waste activated sludge process, two Optiflux flowmeters are being used to measure the throughput of sludge, which is calculated per minute and per day. Another flowmeter is installed to measure the flow of sludge being removed from the system. The fourth Optiflux is used in the treated effluent area to measure the flow of treated water that flows through the facility.

Dennis Thayler, Superintendent at Wells Sanitary District, said: 'Many people don't realise that these meters operate 24/7, under demanding conditions, so they need to offer superior performance and reliability'. 'The use of accurate and reliable meters in this environment cannot be overstated'. 'Flowmeters are essential to the overall process here - and at any treatment facility, for that matter'.

The Wells Sanitary District now meets all safety standards required by the US environmental protection Agency (EPA) and Maine's Department of Environmental Protection. The Optiflux magmeter provides precise measurement across a wide and demanding range of applications. It can achieve an industry-leading accuracy of 0.15% and reproducibility of 0.06%, even when measuring materials with high solid content or that have turbulent flow.
