Tyco Offers SMT Assembly For Solid-State Lighting

Tyco Electronics has announced an RoHS-compliant G13-style SMT assembly and end-cap cover for the solid-state-lighting (SSL) industry. The product supports printed circuit boards (PCBs) and LED strip-lighting modules found in the standard T8 and T12 fluorescent LED retrofit tubes. The integrated assembly enables high-volume manufacturing of fluorescent LED retrofit tubes by allowing a quick SMT electrical connection to the PCB and a standard pin interface to fixture lamp socket (tombstone) connectors.

The product, tape-and-reel packaged to facilitate high-speed processing, is compatible with FR4 and aluminium-clad PCBs. Designed-in features include a surface-mount hold down to provide additional stability of the connector during insertion and/or extraction of the LED tube. The SMT housing material consists of UL 94 V0-rated high-temperature-resistant thermoplastic for reflow processing on automated equipment.

The end-cap cover interfaces with the connector assembly, heat sink and tube, and is packaged separately for ease of assembly. Performance characteristics include: 2A current rating, 250V DC/250V AC voltage rating, 1,500V AC dielectric withstanding voltage and a 0.5in pin centreline spacing per G13 specification. Operating temperature ranges from -40 to 120C. The product is ETL recognised to UL 8750 and UL 1993 standards.

Waldmann LEDs Provide Directional Lighting

Waldmann Lighting has introduced the Slim LED, designed to provide powerful, directional lighting for areas where there is no space for traditional luminaires. It is suitable for integration into a range of machinery and equipment, and eliminates the need for separate task lighting. Typical applications include sheet-metal sawing/drilling, packaging, automation, textile and image processing plants.

Impact and vibration resistant, the rugged IP67-rated Slim LED can be connected directly to a 24V source and is available in lengths from 196 to 1176mm, with the ability to adjust the direction of each LED light source, providing customised floodlighting to suit each application. With its highly efficient LED light sources, Slim LED also offers energy savings with a lamp life of 60,000 hours - equivalent to six years at maximum light output when running 24 hours per day.

The lamps are available in a choice of wattages from 3.6 to 28.8W and can be supplied in an optional wide-beam version with adjustability through +/-45deg. Slim LED can be supplied in a choice of clear or satin covering using a fixed mounting as standard or with an optional adjustable bracket. The cast-aluminium casing is coated in Waldmann's special coating to protect against dust and moisture ingress to IP67.

Combi Light Provides Lighting Options In 20mm Unit

Oxley Developments has brought out a multi-functional light that provides different lighting options from within a single 20mm-high unit. The low-profile Combi Light offers normal, emergency and blackout lighting modes. It is suitable for military shelters, forward-command positions and ground-control stations. It is suitable for use in applications where space and height restrictions, light leakage and durability are key concerns.

The standard white mode delivers crystal-clear illumination and incorporates a dimming function to suit individual environments. The Combi Light's emergency mode utilises separate LEDs powered by a rechargeable battery and provides more than 45 minutes of illumination when fully charged. The red blackout mode is triggered by signal and the LED technology eliminates unwanted residual glare. This is important in scenarios where shelters are positioned in potentially hostile terrain.

Other colour options are also available. Packaging this additional functionality within a single low-profile unit removes the need for separate lighting fixtures. The use of LEDs ensures maintenance-free deployment with a minimum working life of 50,000 hours. The absence of mercury allows for safe disposal. The lights are sealed to IP64 and have CE marking. They utilise a 100/230V universal AC input.

The Combi Light is part of a portfolio of area-lighting products being developed by Oxley. These products include standard white mode flat lights for shelters and field hospitals, tent lights and miniature floodlights for vehicle interiors. Oxley is also developing a smaller version of the Combi Light to suit more restricted shelter environments. Oxley will exhibit its area-lighting products at DVD 2009, which will take place at Millbrook on 24-25 June.

Sensor Unaffected By External Lighting Conditions

IFM Electronic has launched the Efector PMD 3D, an industrial 3D sensor that can detect scenes and objects in three dimensions. The company said it has integrated its photonic mixer device (PMD) time-of-flight measurement sensing technology into a full-vision chip. The image sensor has 64 x 48 pixels. Each pixel of this chip matrix evaluates its distance to the object, resulting in 3,072 distance values.

The image of the object on the matrix and the respective distance values correspond to a 3D image. The geometrical characteristics of the object or the scene can be read from these values. This means the object and the sensor can be stationary; line scanning followed by complex post-imaging processing is simply not involved. The integrated time-of-flight measurement based on PMD technology allows evaluation of geometrical characteristics such as volume, distance, level or surface area.

The applications are easy to resolve, as the firmware has the capability - all users have to do is select the type of evaluation and set the parameters. Two switching outputs indicate the results; or alternatively, one of these switching outputs can be configured as 4-20mA/0-10V analogue output. The device is independent of, and unaffected by, external lighting conditions, having its own built-in infrared illumination.
