Gaia Offers Triple-Output DC/DC Converters

Gaia Converter manufactures a range of triple-output DC/DC converters, which are available to designers of electronic systems worldwide. Triple-output DC/DC converters are available over the power range 4-35W and with combinations of 3.3, 5, 12 and 15V DC outputs and nominal input voltages of 5, 12, 24 and 48V DC. Six ranges of triple-output DC/DC converters are available in industrial and high-reliability versions.

All offer standard and wide-input voltage versions, galvanic isolation to 1,500V DC, integrated LC EMI filter, permanent short-circuit protection, no internal opto-coupler for increased reliability and high efficiency up to 89 per cent. The 4W output MGDM-04 series features a 32 x 19.3 x 7.5mm low-profile package, while the 10W MGDM-10 range is 40 x 26 x 8mm. The higher-power Gaia DC/DC converters are the industry-standard 2 x 2in (50.8x50.8x12.5mm) footprints - these are the 20W MGDM-20 and the 25W MGDM-25.

The two available 1/2 Brick converters are the 30W CGDM-30 at 82.4 x 56 x 8.6mm and the 35W MGDM-35 with dimensions of 82.5 x 48.5 x 12.5mm, which offer extended features such as external-output voltage trim and sense, no-load to full-load operation and external synchronisation.

DC-DC Converters Are Intel VRM 11.1 Compatible

FDK has launched the VR Series of voltage regulator modules (VRM) with the announcement of the FPVR12CR50130PA DC-DC converter. Designed to meet the power needs of high-end microprocessors and related devices in servers, workstations, supercomputers and storage, the VR Series converters are compatible with the Intel VRM 11.1 specification. The FPVR12CR50130PA is the first product in this series and delivers up to 130A of continuous output current with minimal derating and high efficiency.

The FPVR12CR50130PA converter operates from an 11.04V DC to 12.6V DC input, and provides an 8-bit VID programmable output voltage in the range of 0.5V DC to 1.6V DC. Benchmarked at an output voltage of 1.35V DC, it delivers the full rated continuous output current of 130A with no derating up to 40C with 400LFM (2m/s) airflow, at an efficiency of 87 per cent. To minimise capacitance needs, it has a power train comprising six interleaved phases, with an effective switching frequency of 2.4MHz.

The FPVR12CR50130PA is offered in a 3.78in x 0.728in (96mm x 18.5mm) card edge package, with a height of 1.177in (29.9mm). The low profile makes it suitable for applications with rack heights down to 1U, while occupying a footprint of 2.8in2 (18cm2). Standard features include remote On/Off, over-current and over-temperature protection, plus a light load mode to improve efficiency at low output current.

C-MAC Fits Vesuvio Tech Into Cissoid Converters

C-MAC Microtechnology has extended its agreement with Cissoid to integrate Vesuvio technology into high-temperature DC-DC converter designs featuring its Magma and Hyperion semiconductor devices. Following on from the 20W module based around the original ETNA chip set, these new modules offer further improvements in efficiency and packaging density and provide multiple output voltages with life-time operation at 225C. The extended product range will provide output voltages in the range of 1.2V up to 90 per cent of VIN at 2A and up to 50 per cent reduction in physical size.

Efficiencies of more than 90 per cent above 200C confirm the leading class position of the product range. Single, dual and output voltage modules as well as higher-current versions will be available over the coming months. These new products will again feature C-MAC's high-temperature microcircuit integration technology, which provides the highest level of reliability for extended temperature applications.

The high aspect ratio package design will focus on high reliability, harsh environment applications such as oil and gas deep-well drilling, and engine sensing and control in the aerospace and defence markets.

The flexibility of C-MAC's design and manufacturing team will provide the optimum packaging solutions for the module, while allowing custom configurations to be offered.

Power Supply Monitor Manages DC/DC Converters

Linear Technology has introduced the LTC2978 power supply monitor and controller for digital management of up to eight 0-6V power supplies. Configuring multiple DC/DC converters in an already complex system can be a complicated design task when using passive components. Values defined by external trim resistors and capacitors such as start-up time, set point value or switching frequency make a system inflexible.

To alleviate these issues, digital control over analogue power suppliers has allowed for quick adjustment of output voltages and precise protection, monitoring and diagnostic mechanisms. The LTC2978's PMBus-compliant interface provides easy access to an on-board EEPROM, giving users supply configuration, fault response and logging capabilities.

In addition, an array of supervising, margining and sequencing functions make the LTC2978 an all-in-one digital power management solution, simplifying the design challenges and reducing the component count typical of traditional analogue control. Linear Technology said the LTC2978 provides numerous functions with on-the-fly adjustments that make it suitable for digital power control in a variety of automotive, medical and telecommunication applications. An integrated 15-bit ADC and 9:1 ADC MUX allows the IC to accurately monitor and servo eight output channels and one input channel.

The primary PMBus operations include sequencing the start-up of supplies, adjusting point-of-load voltages using voltage-buffered 10-bit current output digital-to-analogue converters (IDACs), margining voltages to programmed limits and supervising output voltages, as well as the LTC2978's die temperature, for overvalue or undervalue conditions. The configuration settings of these operations are user-programmable and can be stored in EEPROM, along with any faults, allowing for discontinuous system use.

A programmable watchdog timer is also provided to supervise an external microcontroller, FPGA or ASIC. For applications that monitor more than eight supplies, the LTC2978 can be cascaded using only two connections. This high level of mixed-signal integration ensures that the LTC2978 can reliably manage complicated power supply systems with ease, according to Linear Technology. The LTC2978 is available in a 64-lead 9 x 9mm QFN package that is RoHS compliant, and is specified over the commercial and industrial temperature ranges.

TDK-Lambda Converters Address Railway Applications

TDK-Lambda has expanded its DC-DC converter line with the introduction of the CN-A Series that has a wide 60-160V DC input range, which is widely used in railway applications. Available with nominal output voltages from 5V to 24V (adjustable +/-10 per cent) and power ratings up to 100W, these wide input range isolated power supplies are fully-regulated.

The CN-A DC-DC modules are suitable for both rolling stock and fixed installations, enabling customers to design cost-effective EN50155 compliant systems without the risks associated with custom product designs and in a much shorter timescale. TDK-Lambda also offers a design and manufacture service for customers preferring to buy in complete systems meeting exact electrical and mechanical requirements. Designed for harsh environments, the CN-A Series meets the stringent shock and vibration requirements of IEC61373 Category 1 Class B, as well as the Japanese equivalent standard JIS E 4031.

In addition, all models accept the wide-range DC input commonly found in railway applications, which allows operation from any voltage between 60 and 160V. These baseplate-cooled power supplies, with industry-standard quarter-brick pinout, provide high, true useable power from -40 to +100C, without derating. The CN100A110-24 model, for example, offers up to 88 per cent power conversion efficiency, 60.5W/in3 power density and delivers up to 4.2A useable output current in a package measuring 57.9mm (L) x 36.8mm (W) x 12.7mm (H).

As standard, they are equipped with remote sense, remote on/off and input-to-output isolation of 3,000V AC, as well as overvoltage and overcurrent protection circuitry. All CN-A models are delivered with TDK-Lambda's five-year warranty, are safety approved to UL/CSA/EN60950-1 and carry the CE mark, according to the LV Directive.
