LMT Launches Shrink Toolholder System

LMT has developed a ready-to-run shrink-fit assembly toolholder system for CNC milling and turn milling. Suitable for the tool spindles of machining centres and driven tool units on turn-mill centres, the ISG 1000 bench-top unit allows users to overcome problems associated with the more traditional collets and hydraulic chucks. The portable unit measures 390 x 310 x 640mm, is powered from a three-phase plug-in source and will accommodate straight shank tool sizes between 3mm and 16mm diameter by up to 290mm in length.

Shrink-fit technology is said to provide a simple way of mounting milling cutters, drills and taps into a toolholder/backend and also provides advantages in the machining process. For instance, it creates a higher rigidity set-up between the machine spindle bearings and the tip of the cutting tool. Run-out at the tool tip should be less than 0.003mm total indicated run-out (TIR), which ensures a more effective rate of feed per tooth can be applied due to the more even loading.

This is especially important on small-diameter or long-series tools. Longer cutting life also results with improved levels of accuracy and surface finish being achieved. In addition, shrink-fit tool assemblies are better able to cope with acceleration of modern spindles and influence of centrifugal force that can allow a normal toolholding arrangement to suffer from slippage in the collet and even tool drop-out. The ISG 1000 unit takes less than 20seconds to heat the nose area of the toolholder through its 6.5kW induction heating coil.

The cutting tool shank is positioned in the holder and is retained as a single unit in the holder as it contracts under cooling. The speed the cooling process, included in the ISG 1000 package is a cooling adapter that enables the heat generated to rapidly dissipate via a series of strategically positioned heat-sink fins. Also included in the LMT UK package is an interchangeable disc, clamping ring and protective gloves.

Zetes Unveils Electronic Proof-Of-Delivery System

Zetes has launched a flexible, low-cost Epod solution to optimise traceability across the supply chain by providing the electronic proof-of-delivery (POD) of goods. Based on a terminal that integrates radio-frequency identification (RFID), wireless communication, a smart card and barcoding technology, the Epod is suitable for retailers or manufacturers with high-value goods or who outsource their transportation requirements to a number of different third parties.

It can be installed either in a vehicle or wall mounted. The system can also complement existing POD systems based on handheld terminals, providing an additional layer of security in a cost-efficient manner, thus reducing shrinkage levels. To develop the solution, Zetes applied People ID techniques to a Goods ID situation, thereby giving the goods originator greater security that goods have been physically delivered and received at their final destination.

The Epod ensures error-free traceability between production centres and warehouses and between warehouses and retail outlets as well as during the movement of goods between locations such as retail outlets, pharmacies or hospitals, according to the company. Real-time correction during the barcode/RFID scanning stage reduces mistakes. At the same time, accurate deliveries reduce returns and physical POD avoids costly claims.

As a standalone solution, the Zetes Epod does not require integration with existing warehouse IT systems and is suitable for companies with either a limited supply-chain capability or who use third-party carriers for a variety of delivery processes. It is also beneficial for small, speciality suppliers such as organic-food producers who do not currently use electronic data interchange (EDI) and are required to make frequent deliveries to retail outlets or distribution hubs.

The process is said to be simple. During shipping, information on what needs to be delivered and where is stored on a smart card. At delivery, containers labelled with RFID tags or barcodes are passed in front of the RFID reader or scanner of the Epod terminal and checked. Physical POD is stored on the smart card and sent via SMS to relevant stakeholders. Information is also uploaded to a repository, enabling data verification, image verification and reporting.

Invensys Enhances Its Enterprise Control System

Invensys Operations Management has released the next evolution of its Infusion enterprise control system (ECS). The Infusion ECS 2.0 features new software platform updates; integration with the company's Foxboro I/A Series distributed control system and SCADA hardware and software offerings; open integration with almost any other automation or information system; and enhanced platform integration with the company's latest advanced applications, including its Wonderware batch manufacturing execution systems, mobile workforce management, enterprise manufacturing intelligence and enterprise business system integration offerings.

With its new capabilities and an integrated offering that can reduce the total cost of ownership, the Infusion ECS 2.0 is intended to help customers consolidate information across their existing automation and information systems, according to Invensys. By enabling real-time access to critical business intelligence, industry users can balance competing strategic objectives related to safety, controls, assets, productivity and the environment to maximise their overall profitability.

'With the Infusion 2.0 solution, it is significantly easier to provide, manage and contextualise information for a wide variety of operations users, allowing them to drive and deliver greater production value in real time,' said Dave Woll, vice-president of consulting services at the ARC Advisory Group. Introduced in 2006, the Infusion ECS utilises open, industry-standards-based Archestra technology that unites process and production control with business operations control.

The system provides functional object templates for a range of control and manufacturing operations applications that work within a single development and management environment. The Infusion ECS can help save time, effort and money by improving the user's ability to view and synchronise information from multiple systems and applications; enhancing collaboration, execution and operations management across a variety of functions within the enterprise; and improving the ability to create and replicate solutions across the enterprise.

Sudipta Bhattacharya, president and chief executive officer of Invensys Operations Management, said: 'Our customers tell us that they need to operate a real-time enterprise so they can react to business variables and balance environmental, productivity and control trade-offs without jeopardising profitability or plant safety. 'Most systems are isolated and only allow optimisation within specific processes or plants. 'The Infusion ECS, however, allows manufacturers to optimise their operations across the entire enterprise,' added Bhattacharya.

Hornet3D Metrology System Uses Confocal Sensors

A non-contact metrology system that provides portable surface profiling, imaging and thickness measurements uses high-precision OptoNCDT 2401 confocal displacement sensors from Micro-Epsilon. Hornet3D, developed by Rhombus VS, is a new metrology system that can measure down to nanometre resolutions. This flexible, modular system can be customised for specific surface-profiling applications. The scalable system can be specified with a range of different sensors and cameras, including Micro-Epsilon's OptoNCDT 2401 confocal displacement measurement sensors.

Hornet3D comprises an X-Y scanner and a stage platform with a modular Z-axis fixture and an integrated sensor. If required, the sensor or microscope can be removed and replaced with an alternative unit, providing flexibility for the user in terms of measurement range and resolution. The stage platform can be made larger or smaller depending on customer requirements. The Hornet offers resolutions in the X-Y axis down to 0.1um. Micro-Epsilon's OptoNCDT 2401 confocal sensor provides a Z-axis resolution down to 10nm and a sampling rate of 0.1kHz to 20kHz depending on the scan parameters.

The system also includes Rhombus's integrated Surescan software, which enables the user to define scan regions and resolution scale. The user can create 2D false colour maps, full 3D animated images, cross-section analyses for sample profiling and measurements and basic report generation. Data can also be exported to third-party software packages and reports generated. According to Graeme Elliner, technical director at Rhombus VS, the OptoNCDT 2401 sensors are suitable for the Hornet system because they are designed for harsh industrial environments. The OptoNCDT 2401 confocal chromatic sensor system comprises a light-emitting-diode-based controller and a sensor, connected by a fibre-optic cable, which can be up to 50m in length.

The system has no moving parts and is therefore wear free. There are three choices of sensor designs available: the 2400, the 2401 and the 2403 series, which together cover more than 24 different measurement ranges as standard. A very small confocal sensor, the 2402 series, has a diameter of 4mm and typical lengths of 40-50mm. ATEX-certified versions are also available. The OptoNCDT 2401 is a compact sensor with a large stand-off distance that is able to perform the one-sided thickness measurement of transparent materials such as glass and plastics, as well as multi-layer surfaces including substrates and laminates.

The sensor offers a high spatial resolution for microscopic surface profiling. The spot-size diameter is down to 7um. The resolution on the 3mm measuring range sensor is 0.12um. The confocal measurement principle uses polychromatic white light, which is focused onto the target surface using a multi-lens optical system. The lenses are arranged so that the white light is dispersed into a monochromatic light by controlled chromatic aberration. A specific distance to the target is assigned to each wavelength by factory calibration.

Only the wavelength that is exactly focused on the target is used for the measurement. This light reflected from the target surface is passed through a confocal aperture onto a spectrometer, which detects and processes the spectral changes. Extremely high resolutions are said to be possible when using the confocal principle. Resolution in the nanometre range is possible by expanding the colour spectrum. As colour in the focal point is used for distance information, confocal sensors have a very small measuring spot, which also enables measurements on tiny objects.

Even small scratches on a surface or substrate can be detected. The beam path of the sensor is compact and concentric, enabling the system to measure inside drilled holes, which other optical measurement methods (such as laser triangulation) find difficult to achieve due to the formation of shadows. Elliner said: 'Confocal displacement sensors are an excellent fit with our Hornet system as they are modular in their design.

'There is one standard controller and interface; only the sensor head needs to be changed. 'Long cable runs are also possible, so we can solve most application issues. 'We've used the confocal sensor in a wide range of applications to date, including the surface profiling of tracks in printed circuit boards and measuring the thickness of thin-film solar panels, glass substrates, laser micro-machining, inkjet printing and even wear on hip joints,' he added.

Lecroy Selects Keithley RF/Microwave Switch System

Lecroy has selected Keithley Instruments' System 46 (S46) RF/microwave switch system as part of the original equipment for its USB 3.0 Test Suite product family. Keithley's S46 switch is engineered to simplify the automated switching needed to test a range of telecommunications products and devices, including Bluetooth devices. The USB 3.0 Test Suite represents a single-source line-up of test instruments that can comprehensively support the Universal Serial Bus (USB) 3.0 standard, also known as Superspeed USB.

The S46 RF/microwave switch is used in applications such as: testing cellular and cordless phones; specialised mobile radios; base stations; specialised antenna systems; RF components including RFICs; wireless peripherals, including Bluetooth devices; broadband wireless transceivers; and high-speed digital communications including Sonet devices with speeds of 3Gbps and 10Gbps. The standard S46 system is specified for a bandwidth of 18GHz; custom S46 systems can support bandwidths up to 40GHz.

As test requirements change, relays can be easily added to the system to create a new switch configuration. The S46 controller automatically counts relay contact closures to allow equipment maintenance personnel to assess when the relays are nearing the end of their mechanical life. In this way, preventative maintenance can be performed in a timely way during scheduled shutdowns, avoiding unplanned shutdowns and the resulting loss of production time.

In addition to counting contact closures, the S46 has a portion of its memory available to store S-parameters or calibration constants for each relay contact or each pathway. If a specific performance parameter is critical, such as voltage standing wave ratio or insertion loss, the parameter can be stored in memory for use in trend analysis between scheduled maintenance shutdowns. Stored parameters can also be used for compensation to enhance accuracy during RF measurements.

Horizon Offers Novolas Basic Laser-Welding System

Horizon Instruments has introduced a compact tabletop laser-welding system designed for easy integration into a production line or for standalone use within manufacturing cells. The Novolas Basic AT Compact system utilises fibre-coupled diode laser optics developed by laser-welding specialist Leister Process Technologies, represented in the UK and Ireland by Horizon Instruments. Leister laser-welding systems enable the joining of intricate plastic components and can therefore provide important opportunities for the low-cost development of components, production methods and techniques used within the plastics industry, which includes the automotive, electronics, FMCG, healthcare and medical-device sectors.

With plastic fabrications playing an ever-increasing role in numerous high-volume manufacturing applications, compact and affordable systems such as the Novolas Basic AT meet the challenges of providing effective and versatile joining methods and offer important features and benefits, including, for example: outstanding micron precision, emission and particulate-free processing, optimum weld strength, high reproducibility and minimal mechanical and thermal stress. The Novolas Basic AT Compact system is air-cooled, which results in a more compact (483 x 500 x 267mm) and lower-cost system.

The system includes a fibre-coupled laser module with an optical power of 40W. This makes it suited for use with Leister's standard spot or Globo optic, which can be used for welding applications requiring low energy input. The effectiveness of the Leister Globo optic technique was acknowledged by the Swiss Technology Award in 2004 and has proved its qualities across many complex 3D joining applications.

The laser beam is focused by a glass sphere carried on an air bearing. The laser optic head can then be mounted to a six-axis robot, which is programmed to follow the 3D profile to be welded. By applying direct pressure during the welding process, the Globo head eliminates the need for a clamping mechanism. Further specially designed optics by Leister allow for simultaneous welding of various geometries of the component, with the Ring Optic and Radial Optic being two examples. Both of these enable fast welding speeds, guaranteeing short cycle times and increased throughput in series production.

Easy to install and operate, the power-monitoring system can be employed to quickly identify the 15 to 20 per cent annual energy savings that, according to energy industry estimates, are available simply by reducing the costs of lighting, HVAC and the operation of plant and machinery.

Flow-Chemistry System Has Upgraded Pump Manifold

The Uniqsis Flowsyn flow-chemistry system has an upgraded pump manifold that continuously monitors each high-pressure reagent channel and alerts the user to any flow abnormalities. With the reagent manifold used in Flowsyn, the pump can be re-primed on the fly, so that the run can continue. Interlocks are provided so that if the error is not remedied within a specified period, the experiment is aborted.

If an error condition is detected in one pump channel, the other is automatically stopped simultaneously until the problem is dealt with. Improved automatic injection valves are also available for Flowsyn, with highly inert rotor seals and larger-diameter channels that allow sample loops to be filled more quickly and are less easily blocked.

These valves can be retrofitted to any Flowsyn unit with electrically operated injection valves. Vertical syringe ports mean that syringes can be left in place during a run to make re-priming easier.

The Flowsyn Continuous Flow Reactor integrates all the essential elements for continuous flow chemistry into a single package. Flowsyn is simple to set up and operate and offers safe, unattended operation for tasks such as synthesis, reaction optimisation and scale-up experiments, in quantities from milligrams to hundreds of grams.

Milliprobe System Detects Mycoplasma Contamination

Millipore has launched a product as part of its collaboration with Roka Bioscience to develop faster, more robust tests for contaminants in pharmaceutical and biotechnology manufacturing. The Milliprobe Detection System for Mycoplasma is said to be the first solution of its kind for the early detection of mycoplasma contamination in the highly regulated biopharmaceutical manufacturing industry. The system is also said to cut detection time from between 28 and 35 days (for traditional culture-based technology) to four hours.

Faster and more robust detection enables biopharmaceutical manufacturers to test more frequently and take corrective action earlier in the production process, reducing financial risks and optimising product yields. Roland Heinrich, Millipore vice president, Process Monitoring, said: 'It includes a novel Millipore sample-preparation device designed to handle complex bioreactor samples in larger volumes than other mycoplasma testing products.

'It also includes Gen-Probe's Background Reduction Technology, which protects the assay from contamination that can cause false positive results.

Lincoln Push Pull System Extracts Weld Fumes

For welding operations, Lincoln Electric offers weld-fume-extraction solutions for a variety of applications and fabrication environments. An alternative concept in shop fume extraction systems, Push Pull environmental systems are suitable for: manufacturing and fabrication applications where fume extraction at the source is difficult; fabrication of especially large work pieces; shops that utilise robotic and hard automation welding fixtures; and manufacturing where welding work cell locations change.

A Push Pull system captures shop air and welding fume within a given perimeter, filters it, then pushes the filtered air back into the working air in the same area. This method reduces energy costs, as the heated or cooled air from the shop is circulated back into the manufacturing location rather than exhausted outdoors. Lincoln Electric systems are able to filter only the immediate work area.

A Push Pull system is a general ventilation solution, which can be used to supplement targeted control of welding fume at the arc. Push Pull systems are intended for use when the goal is to improve general indoor air quality. A complete range of welding-fume solutions, including equipment intended for use specifically at the source, is also offered by Lincoln Electric.
