Porvair Showcases Filtration/Separation Technology

Porvair Filtration Group has announced that it will be present at the 2010 Waste Management Conference on 7-11 March in Phoenix, Arizona. Technical specialists from the Microfiltrex division of Porvair Filtration Group will be on-hand at the event to discuss and propose filtration/separation-based engineering solutions to visitors from the nuclear power generation, fuel manufacture, and waste treatment and storage sectors.

The Microfiltrex division of Porvair Filtration Group designs complete systems to meet the demands of virtually any application, including: powder transport in the fuel manufacturing sector; final grinding coolant (liquid and air); sintering furnace and conversion oven off-gas; disposable and cleanable filters for active liquors; fluidised bed venting; spent fuel dry storage pre-processing; reactor safety relief valve and containment venting protection; and cross-flow liquid waste volume reduction.

Mosca Showcases Ultrasonic Technology At Ipex

Mosca is exhibiting solutions for the graphics industry at Ipex, including its Sonixs ultrasonic technology and examples from its range of bundle strappers and pallet presses. Sonixs is said to offer considerable speed and sealing advantages over conventional strapping methods. Ultrasonic sealing is very efficient, with the tensile strength of the strap at 85 per cent. As a result, the strap can withstand greater stresses during transportation and it is also often possible to use lower cost, narrower or thinner strap material.

Sonixs machines are also said to be more economical and produce lower emissions, with practically no fumes or smells produced. Also, by avoiding heat sealing techniques, there is no residue buildup caused by melted strap to dispose of. The Mosca stand will feature several working Sonixs machines designed with the needs of the graphics industry in mind. Several bundle strappers will be on display, including the Sonixs TRP and the Sonixs TAI (comprising a Sonixs TRI in-strapper and a Sonixs-TR cross-strapper).

In addition, Mosca is showing the standalone Sonixs-MP semi-automatic strapping machine, which can strap at a rate of over 60 cycles per minute - as opposed to 40 cycles using a conventional heat-sealing machine. For pallets, Mosca is running a KCK-131 press that incorporates an integrated lift turn cross to enable four-way strapping. The machine is capable of speeds up to 120 pallets an hour for two parallel straps, or 60 pallets an hour for four-way cross-strapping. The final machine on the stand is Mosca's Romp-K high-speed standalone automatic strapping machine, designed for the wholesale distribution sector.

Using the same sealing head as Mosca's Romp-4, the new model offers a simplified design with a more compact body - allowing it to be placed in busy wholesale and distribution environments. Adding to the Romp-K's flexibility and convenience, a foot pedal is located on either side of the machine.

Steel Company Implements Linde Oxyfuel Technology

Oxyfuel technology developed and deployed by Linde North America has helped Arcelormittal win the Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST) 2009 Energy Achievement Award. The award recognises Arcelormittal's efforts to reduce fuel consumption by nearly two thirds in the billet reheating operation at its seamless tube mill in Shelby, Ohio. The steel company received the award in January for its work to implement Linde Rebox oxyfuel solutions on its rotary hearth furnace.

Linde and Arcelormittal worked together to convert the furnace from air-fuel to complete flameless oxyfuel operation. Following the 2007 implementation of a Linde Rebox oxyfuel technical solution, Arcelormittal realised a 60 per cent reduction in the furnace's total fuel consumption compared to the original air-fuel operation. The Linde technology also reduced the furnace's annual nitrogen-oxide emissions output by 92 per cent and annual CO2 emissions by up to 60 per cent below the prior air-fuel performance.

The conversion also enabled Arcelormittal to achieve a 25 per cent increase in material throughput and a 50 per cent reduction in scale formation. Linde Rebox oxyfuel solutions enable rolling mills, forge shops, annealing operations and hot-dip galvanising lines to increase furnace throughput by as much as 50 per cent and improve operational flexibility, heating performance and temperature uniformity while reducing scale formation and cutting fuel consumption.

As HBM celebrates its 60th anniversary the company discusses its future plans. Touch Technology Achieves Windows 7 Compatibility

Tyco Electronics has launched the Intellitouch Plus surface-acoustic-wave touch technology, which has achieved the 'Compatible with Windows 7' logo.

The technology is designed to give OEMs, application developers and customers tools to leverage the advantages of the Windows 7 touch interface. The Elo Touchsystems Intellitouch Plus touch technology has met all the Additional Qualification (AQ) testing requirements established by Microsoft for Windows 7 multi-touch interactivity. Intellitouch Plus touch technology is based upon surface-acoustic-wave technology.

It accurately records two simultaneous touch locations anywhere on the screen with three axes of touch information, enabling it to overcome problems such as camera-based optical that are subject to interferences from ambient light variances and false touches. Intellitouch Plus multi-touch technology is available as screen components in sizes ranging from 17 to 32in for consumer touch monitors and all-in-one touch computers running Windows 7.

In addition, a 22in open-frame touch monitor will be available later in the year, enabling users to incorporate a multi-touch technology that is compatible with Windows 7.

GPEG To Bring Capplus Technology To Market

GPEG International is to bring Wacom Components' Capplus capacitive touch technology to market. Wacom Components has created an enhanced surface capacitive touch component solution for mid- to large-size flat panel applications. Using reversing ramped field capacitive (RRFC) technology, Capplus products are said to overcome many of the traditional performance barriers associated with existing surface capacitive technology.

Darren Chapman, sales manager at GPEG International, said: 'By applying RRFC across the range, all products are able to combine the advantages of capacitive features such as light and accurate touch feel, robust glass substrates, and ease of sealing, but can also be used with thin gloves for hospital and patient monitoring applications. 'The additional immunity to liquids on the touch surface is a feature of benefit to medical, industrial and outdoor kiosk manufacturers.

'Wacom has improved the surface scratch resistance of Capplus by increasing the coating thickness to be up to four times greater than traditional capacitive touch panels. 'The touch-screen controller has many features: it does not need to be sold as a matched pair with individual panels, it has good sensitivity and linearity through enhanced digital processing and offers higher immunity to ground drift and nearby metals. 'For the gaming and kiosk market this means that it is no longer necessary to re-calibrate the touch screen each time the product is powered down.

Invensys Forms OTS Technology Alliance With RWD

Invensys has formed a global relationship with RWD that will see RWD create training programmes for Invensys's operator training simulators (OTS) for clients in the hydrocarbon processing industries.

The initial offering will encompass several Invensys Simsci-Esscor products, including Dynsim software for operator training, utilising a simulator modelling platform, and the Eyesim 3-D virtual reality field-operator training solution. By including professional training services, clients can maximise the benefits they experience from an OTS alone.

Intersil LDOs Utilise Bicmos Technology

Intersil has introduced the ISL80102 and ISL80103, a pair of low-voltage, high-current, low dropout linear regulators (LDOs), specified at 2A and 3A output current respectively. The parts utilise Bicmos technology, providing a fast transient response, which ensures that the output voltage is properly regulated under varying load current changes. They also feature 120mV dropout at 3A and 81mV dropout at 2A.

Operating from input voltages of 2.2V to 6V, the ISL80102 and ISL80103 are capable of providing supply output voltages of 0.8V to 5V on the adjustable versions. Fixed output voltages of 0.8V, 1.2V, 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V and 5V are also available, along with custom voltage options. Initial VOUT accuracy is +/- 0.5 per cent, and the devices provide +/- 1.8 per cent guaranteed VOUT accuracy for the junction temperature range of -40C to +125C, assuring point-of-load voltage regulation in critical applications.

Shutdown current is less than 1microA, and PSRR is 60dB over full-rated load current. The two LDOs also include an enable feature, so they can be placed into a low quiescent current shutdown mode. Additional capabilities, including 'power good' status indicator, soft-start, over-current protection and thermal shutdown, ensure the LDOs are reliable and customisable for various applications.

This combination of features are said to make the ISL80102 and ISL80103 ideal for a range of applications including core power supplies for microprocessors, DSPs and FPGAs, as well as instrumentation applications, industrial medical equipment, servers and networking equipment. The devices are manufactured using a Bicmos process, meaning that they consume lower quiescent current as a function of load, compared with LDOs manufactured using older bipolar processes. The ISL80102 and ISL80103 are available in compact 3 x 3 10-lead DFN packages.

Murata Technology Reduces MLCC Damage

Murata has developed a capacitor end-termination technology that significantly reduces the risk of damage when subject to bending stress. The GCJ and GRJ series of MLCCs incorporate Murata's 'soft' termination technology and are based on its GCM and GRM series of MLCCs for automotive (GCJ) and consumer-device (GRJ) applications. The GCJ series is AEC-Q200 compliant.

The 'soft' termination type reduces the risk of stress damage by applying a layer of conductive polymer within the capacitor's electrodes. It is the elasticity of the polymer that reduces the bending stress in the capacitor. In tests conducted by Murata, 'soft' termination MLCCs were soldered with 200um-thick solder to a typical 1.6mm-thick PCB and the board was then flexed. The soft-termination versions typically did not suffer any stress damage after the board had flexed 5mm.

The terminations of standard Murata MLCCs have three layers: the innermost copper, then nickel, then tin on the outside. In the GCJ and GRJ series, after the copper layer is added, conductive polymer is applied to the outer electrode and the nickel and tin layers are added as normal. The process does not affect the equivalent series resistance (ESR) or current rating, so the GRJ and GCJ series capacitors have the equivalent properties as their GRM and GCM counterparts. GRJ series are available with 250V-, 630V- and 1KV-rated voltage.

4DSP Develops Advanced Scalable Technology

The first in a series of Xilinx Virtex 6 FPGA-based XMC and PMC boards has been launched by 4DSP. The FM680 features a design and manufacturing technique that provides customers with a configurability called Blast (Board Level Advanced Scalable Technology). 4DSP created Blast to accelerate the manufacturing process for customer specific configurations that normally delay the production cycle and add to production costs. In addition to Blast, the FM680 offers advancements in digital signal processing (DSP) over previous FPGA technologies.

The Xilinx Virtex 6 provides more usable FPGA resources at a substantially reduced power consumption and therefore generated heat. The FM680 is suitable for rapid prototyping as well as production of video applications where there is a need for abundant FPGA logic resources for specialised image processing. The FM680 is also suitable for radar and sonar signal processors and specialised software-defined radio (SDR) as used in the US Navy's JTRS Program.

Coupling the advancement of the Xilinx Virtex 6 FPGA with Blast, the FM680 offers the customer greater granularity while keeping a rapid manufacturing process in place. Up to five Blast mounting sites or 'Blast sites' of BGA type, each containing 100 single-ended I/O pins connected to the Virtex FPGA, can be mounted as an assembly. The Blast concept allows customers a mix of five combinations of memory devices, including JPEG2000 codec, dedicated signal processor, H-264 MPEG-4, 32Gbyte solid-state drives and more.

'One example of a recent customer's request was to have 4DSP to implement the Texas Instruments TMS320C6457 DSP chip on a double Blast,' said Douglas Sherrod, director of marketing and business development at 4DSP. 'This allowed the customer to pull forward legacy DSP code to be reused along with a complex algorithm implemented inside the Virtex 6 FPGA, thus saving investment in proven legacy DSP code,' he added. The FM680 follows the Virtex 5 based FM489 Series where major configuration options were worked out using 4DSP's just-in-time (JIT) process Blast concept.

This manufacturing process provided customers with the ability to specify architectural features such as memory type, added signal processors, microcontrollers, video Codecs, solid-state drives and custom circuits. Specific variants of the FM680 will be rolled out within the next few months. Among them, the VID675 will feature a six codec JPEG2000 hardware compression engine based on the Analog Devices ADV212. The VID675 is suitable for on-the-fly image processing from multiple cameras and high-speed real-time compression.

With sustained performance of 350 megapixels/s, the VID675 allows simultaneous compression of 16 coloured video streams 640x480. UAVs or digital imaging applications that require lossless compression in real time can utilise the performance offered by the VID675. FM680 and VID675 Series processors are backed by 4DSP's engineering services programme, where specific FPGA algorithmic processes are developed to meet customer requirements.

BFI To Distribute Multichannel DA Technology

BFI Optilas, a photonic distributor in Europe, and Amplification Technologies, a subsidiary of Powersafe Technology (PSFT), have announced an exclusive European distribution partnership. Amplification Technologies has developed an approach for the detection of low-level signals - multichannel discrete amplification (DA) - that allows the simultaneous attainment of very high gain, high speed and ultra-low excess noise in a silicon or InGaAs device.

DA involves three basic functions: distributing individual signal electrons into a separate independent amplification channel; amplifying each individual signal electron in a separate channel to a readable charge packet; and reading the amplified charge packets. The benefits of the technology include single photon-level sensitivity, a wide spectral range, a relatively flat spectral sensitivity curve, excellent voltage and thermal stability, high photon detection efficiency, a wide dynamic range, a fast response, high reliability and a low production cost.

It can provide a new performance level to applications such as PET scanners, medical imaging, fluorescence detection, high-energy physics, spectroscopy, biological sensors, Ladar and Lidar, homeland security, confocal microscopy and night vision.

AT32UC3L MCU Features Low-Power Technology

Atmel has introduced the 32-bit AT32UC3L AVR32 microcontroller with Picopower low-power technology and embedded capacitive touch-controller peripheral. The AT32UC3L provides less than 0.48mW/MHz in active mode executing real-life applications. The device is also the first 32-bit microcontroller to feature a built-in capacitive touch interface, making it suitable in a range of embedded applications. Atmel's Picopower technology enables the AT32UC3L to operate on less than 1.5uA with the 32KHz real time clock active, and below 100nA with all oscillators stopped.

The device features Atmel's 1.6V technology, which keeps the device fully operational in systems with supply-voltages ranging from 1.62 to 3.60V. The AT32UC3L's built-in capacitive touch peripheral unit makes capacitive touch as easy as incorporating another peripheral. The device supports capacitive touch buttons and sliders and the hardware support enables the addition of capacitive touch to the application, with no additional software overhead. The capacitive touch hardware also allows the microcontroller to wake up from sleep on touch.

Atmel's QTouch technology provides a robust touch solution with a high signal-to-noise ratio that improves the system's design margin, increases EMC performance and raises ESD tolerance. It is ideal for applications where reliability is required, such as consumer user interfaces, industrial and automotive applications and those where high moisture-levels are present. The AT32UC3L includes a new flash-security technology called Flashvault. Flashvault allows the on-chip flash to be partially programmed and locked, creating secure on-chip storage for secret code and software intellectual property.

Code stored in the Flashvault will execute as normal, but cannot be read, copied or debugged. This allows a device with Flashvault code protection to carry a piece of valuable software such as a math library or an encryption algorithm from a trusted location to a potentially untrustworthy partner where the rest of the source code can be developed, debugged and programmed. The AT32UC3L also introduces Atmel's Peripheral Event System for the first time on a 32-bit microcontroller. The system allows peripherals to send signals (events) directly to other peripherals without involving the CPU.

By offloading to the peripheral event system the repetitive task of forwarding these events, the CPU will drastically reduce the time-consuming handling of interrupts. This will free up more time for the CPU to handle other tasks in the application and often allow the CPU to remain longer in one of the AVR32's many energy-saving sleep modes. The UC3L has a clock system with clock-failure protection, frequency meter, real time clock with calendar mode, a precision crystal oscillator tuner and accurate digital frequency locked loop. The peripherals include a nine-channel 12-bit ADC and eight-channel analogue comparator.

The device is the first microcontroller from Atmel to feature an eight-bit PWM output on every I/O pin. Atmel's AVR32 UC3L is supported by the AVR32 Studio integrated development environment used for Atmel's AVR32 product line. It is available for free on Atmel's website. IAR's Embedded Workbench also supports AVR32 devices. Debugging tools include Atmel's Avrone, STK 600 Starter Kit, and JTAGICE mkII on-chip debugger. Samples of the AT32UC3L are available now.

Flow Technology Unveils FT/DF Turbine Flowmeter

Flow Technology, a manufacturer of precision flow-measurement instruments, systems and calibrators, has introduced the FT/DF (diesel-fuel) turbine flowmeter system. The system is said to provide accurate measurements of diesel-fuel consumption in a range of industrial applications. End users employ fuel flowmeters to monitor diesel-fuel consumption in the automotive, marine, aerospace and power-generation industries.

For example, mining companies utilising diesel generators to power their operations require the accurate monitoring of diesel-fuel usage to ensure the efficiency and reliability of the generators. Flowmeters used in this application must be able to withstand extreme temperature swings in the installation environment. Pairing Flow Technology's FT Series turbine meter with the Linearlink temperature-compensated interface (TCI), the FT/DF system can accurately measure diesel fuel at temperatures as low as -50F.

The turbine flowmeter incorporates 'fail-open' technology, meaning that, in the event of a malfunction, fuel continues to be fed to the generator, ensuring that there is no interruption of power to the industrial operation. The FT Series turbine flowmeter relies on a proven flow-measurement technique to provide accurate and reliable digital outputs. As a result of its versatility, the FT meter is suitable for a variety of liquid and gas flow sensing applications.

The Linearlink TCI represents a sophisticated electronics platform for flowmeter linearisation and viscosity correction, according to the company. It is said to provide improvements in flow meter accuracy, even under extreme temperature conditions.

Bank Of Algeria Mint Invests In CAD CAM Technology

The Bank of Algeria Mint has invested in equipment and methods from Sescoi to help it respond to the demands of modern banking and to encourage the growth of the country's economy. The tooling department needed a computer-aided-design (CAD)/computer-aided-manufacturing (CAM) system to help it improve its range of capabilities and shorten lead times. The Bank of Algeria purchased WorkNC from Sescoi in 2006.

The assistant director at the Bank of Algeria Mint said: 'We have a wide range of CNC milling and turning machines and we needed to modernise in order to achieve just-in-time manufacture, respond to urgent requirements and machine increasingly complex and intricate shapes.' Before the introduction of WorkNC, programming was carried out on the machine tool control, which required high levels of skill from the operator, reduced the available capacity and the productivity of each machine and limited the complexity of the parts being produced.

WorkNC-CAD is used to design existing or new components and parts using its recently incorporated parametric solid modelling. Furthermore, the WorkNC-CAD turning module is said to make CNC lathe machining easy and reliable. For machining and engraving, the bank uses WorkNC to create programs from two axis right through to the full five axis. The assistant director said: 'We program all our CNC machines with WorkNC for the milling of simple or complex parts.

'We have optimised our production processes and achieved productivity gains of more than 60 per cent.' For its five-axis programming, the Bank of Algeria uses WorkNC's Auto 5. Unique to Sescoi, the software automatically translates three-axis toolpaths into five-axis toolpaths, making five-axis machining as simple to program as three-axis machining, with reliable and collision-free toolpaths. Using the technology gives the bank the advantages of using short rigid cutters and the ability to reach more of the part in one setting, resulting in improved surface finish and shorter machining times.

Sescoi's five-axis routines include collision-avoidance algorithms, which consider the limits of the individual machine tool, introducing unwind and flip movements so that machining can continue safely and uninterrupted. The assistant director said: 'The ease of use of Auto 5 has enabled us to adopt five-axis machining methods very quickly. 'We find that the toolpaths it creates for our five-axis machines are completely reliable and we anticipate purchasing more licences in a few weeks.' The bank invests in a continuous training program with Sescoi, ensuring that its engineers can fully exploit WorkNC's capabilities, benefit from the support hotline and receive software upgrades.
