Parker Hydraulic Hoses Minimise Maintenance

Parker Hannifin has launched three hydraulic hoses, developed to minimise maintenance and increase profitability across a range of industrial applications. The Parker Powerlift 477 medium-pressure hose has been specifically developed for the crane and lifting-equipment market. The Powerlift features two steel-wire braids and offers a combination of higher working pressure, smaller outside diameter based on compact hose construction, tight bending radius and light weight.

The nitrile inner tube offers increased chemical resistance to bio oil and the outer cover is resistant to abrasion, providing longer service life and reduced overall equipment costs. The Remoflex 412 is a highly flexible pilot-line hose for an increased constant working pressure of 12.0MPa and meets the requirements of modern hydraulic control systems, mainly used in mobile applications. The hose combines an abrasion- and ozone-resistant cover with a small outside diameter and fluid compatibility through a nitrile inner tube.

The Remoflex 412 is aimed at industrial sectors, especially space-restricted mobile construction equipment. The Push-Lok Plus 801 is a low-pressure hose with a higher working pressure and extended colour range. The hose features Parker's Push-Lok self-grip system, which makes assembly easy and fast with no need for tools or clamps. The hose is available in seven colours to simplify identification, production processes, control of maintenance intervals and stock planning. Push-Lok fittings are available worldwide and are made to DIN, BSP, SAE, JIC and ORFS in steel, brass and stainless steel.

Dry-Ice Cleaning Cuts Packing-Machine Maintenance

By utilising cryogenic cleaning technology from Polar ICS on its weighing and packing machines, Turners PPL has reduced the time it takes to clean the machines by 60 per cent. Polar ICS's cleaning technology is based on dry-ice (or cryogenic) blasting, which enables production machines to be cleaned while in situ. Compared to traditional methods, Polar ICS's dry-ice cleaning solution is said to reduce cleaning time by approximately 90 per cent.

The cleaning process itself is also non-toxic, non-conductive and non-abrasive. Dry-ice blasting uses compact pellets that are accelerated in a jet of compressed air. These pellets strike the surface at the speed of sound, whereupon they crack and loosen the coating on the surface that is being treated. The pellets' -79C temperature makes the coating brittle, which cracks and loosens the surface, allowing the dry ice to permeate the coating.

The ice then passes from a solid state to vapour, which leads to a 700-fold increase in volume, an explosive effect that lifts the coating off the surface. Dry ice vapourises immediately on contact with treated surfaces. There is no secondary waste material - the only waste from the process is the coating that has been dislodged by the treatment, which can be swept or vacuumed. This also means that the technology can be used to clean difficult-to-reach surfaces.

ABB Cuts Maintenance Costs At Severn Trent

Severn Trent Water (STW) is achieving savings of up to GBP2,400 a week on pump maintenance after upgrading its pump control software, which was supplied by ABB. STW had installed four submersible foul pumps at its sewage treatment works in Worcester, pumping raw sewage from a new foul well. The pumps are driven by four 132kW ABB industrial drives, supplied complete with filters to reduce harmonics caused by the drives.

Following commissioning of the variable speed drives (VSDs), STW experienced a number of blockages in the foul pumps, caused largely by rags sticking to the impeller. As well as downtime, clogging can lead to sewage pollution. A total system failure can lead to effluent leakage, with implications for the environment and health and safety, as well incurring clean-up costs and resulting in possible breaches of legislation.

Clearing these blockages was a time-consuming process. Every time a pump became blocked, it had to be removed from the well, split open and cleaned out, which is an expensive job because a crane has to be hired each time to clean the pump.

To cure this problem, ABB suggested installation of its Anti-Jam software, a module of its Intelligent Pump Control software. The Anti-Jam software performs a number of cleaning cycles every time the pump starts; each cycle consist of a series of rapid ramp ups in both forward and reverse directions.

Taking one to two minutes to complete, the cleaning cycle removes the debris from around the pump volute, preventing it from entering the pump and blocking it when the pump ramps up from zero to its normal operating speed. The cleaning cycle is also started when the VSD detects a drop in pump efficiency. Following installation of the software in February, STW has not experienced a single blockage of the foul pumps. ABB supplied its module completely free of charge to STW.

Magnetic Drum Requires Minimal Maintenance

Eriez Magnetics Europe has launched the Inox Srex permanent magnetic drum as an addition to the range of Eriez permanent magnetic drum separators. The Inox Srex utilises rare earth high intensity permanent magnetic technology to recover fragmented stainless steel, small ferrous metals and weakly magnetic materials from non-magnetic materials.

Requiring minimum maintenance, the Inox Srex is said to be ideal for use prior to, or post Eddy current separators and metal sorters. It is available either as an individual unit or part of a complete metal separation module, and is said to be easily installed into new or existing plants. Eriez said the drum's magnetic strength and robust design ensure high performance in the most arduous environments. The design originated in Japan, resulting from a customer's separation requirement. The rare earth magnets are specially made for Eriez to produce high magnetic fields.

With enhanced separation capabilities compared with other equipment such as magnetic pulleys and standard rare earth magnetic drums, the Inox Srex is said to bring important benefits to recycling processors. Greater recovery of metallic waste results in landfill charges and increased profit as the recovered metal can be sold on.

Michell Sensor Speeds Up Maintenance Of RH Devices

Michell Instruments has introduced the I7000 Hygrosmart humidity sensor, which is claimed to make the maintenance of the company's relative-humidity (RH) instruments quick and simple with no downtime. The interchangeable module incorporates all calibration data and is delivered together with a calibration certificate.

To ensure continued measurement accuracy over time, the user can recalibrate an instrument by replacing the old sensor with a new one. No specialist training is required for this process, according to the company. The I7000 Hygrosmart interchangeable module forms the base of a range of temperature and humidity instruments, suitable for applications from precision manufacturing to controlled environments and heating, ventilation and air conditioning.
