High-Accuracy Gauge Checks Component Quality

Bowers Metrology has supplied the Gagemaker instrument to X:Cel Superturn to help maintain quality standards of X:Cel's rings, gaskets and seals. X:Cel Superturn specialises in the production of precision machined components and specialised joints and gaskets. Although serving customers in the power generation, aerospace and construction sectors, the company's output is predominantly destined for the petrochemical industry.

X:Cel Superturn produces components for down-hole drilling as well as surface and subsea applications. After purchasing X:Cel in 2007, Sheffield Superturn continued to establish the global supply chain. Wayne Adcock, X:Cel Superturn's quality manager, said: 'As failure in the field of any of our joint and gaskets could have catastrophic financial and environmental implications, we undertake the most rigorous quality control checks, both throughout the manufacturing cycle of our components and at the final inspection stage.

'To help enable X:Cel Superturn to uphold our reputation, we frequently invest in quality control equipment. 'Having recently identified a need for a flexible, yet accurate, diameter measuring gauge that could be used on components located on our machine tools, we requested a demonstration of the Gagemaker Groove Diameter and Groove Width gauges from Bowers Metrology,' he added. Bowers Metrology stocks a wide range of Gagemaker equipment. Gagemaker's Groove Diameter/Width gauges are able to accommodate diameters from 2.6in to 13in and groove widths from 0.34in to 1.5in.

Optional rails extend the range of diameter measurements from 13in to 36in. The face groove gauges accurately measure the ring groove diameter and width at the critical sealing point of the face groove, while the gauge indicators display actual deviation from a preset master dimension. The Gagemaker BX-1000 can be used for a range of applications, including the measurement of straight or tapered groove diameters, shallow bores and hole locations.

Now in regular use, X:Cel Superturn's large diameter gauges are helping to maintain the standards of its rings, gaskets and seals. 'The Gagemaker instrument has taken away a potential bottleneck from our large capacity CMM and is being used both in process, with the measured component still located in the machine tool, and for final component inspection,' said Adcock.

Essemtec Launches Radial Component Feeder

Essemtec has launched the CLM979 radial component feeder that enables the assembly of through-hole LEDs on a standard pick-and-place machine. The feeder releases LEDs from the tape, cuts the wire ends and prepares the component for pickup. Typically two different machines have been required for mixed placements: an SMD pick-and-place and a placement machine for conventional components. However, with the CLM979 radial feeder, a pick-and-place can accomplish both through-hole LED assembly and SMD placement.

Essemtec said this saves space, time and money. The LEDs are supplied in radial tapes. The CLM979 feeder transports the components, releases them from the tape, cuts the wire ends to the desired length and aligns them parallel. So-prepared LEDs can now be handled by the SMD pick-and-place with a vacuum pickup tool.

In order to guarantee smooth insertion of the LEDs into the soldering holes, the wire ends are inspected using optical systems (laser and vision). If the wires are bent out of tolerance, because of a bent terminal, for example, the component is rejected. The CLM979 feeder can be mounted in parallel to standard SMD component feeders - therefore, mixed placement is possible in one run.

Depending on the application, through-hole LEDs can be soldered using the solder wave or reflow soldering system (pin-in-paste technology). The radial feeder CLM979 is said to expand the application range of a standard SMD placement machine and increases flexibility. The feeder is compatible with most of Essemtec's automatic pick-and-place machines. It also can be retrofitted on machines of other brands.

Rittal Portal Delivers Component And Device Data

The web-based Eplan Data Portal delivers around 100,000 pieces of the latest component and device data from numerous component manufacturers. A collection of device and component data - provided directly by companies such as ABB, Rittal, Phoenix Contact and Lapp Kabel - that has been verified for use in the Eplan platform, ensures engineering at maximum speed.

A desired component can be found by using a keyword, manufacturer name, product group or catalogue view in the direct-search function. Consistent and reliable data is entered directly in a project from the Eplan Data Portal - with all the convenient functions of a web-based solution. With just a click, complete macros of, for example, PLC devices, measuring transducers or frequency converters can be imported into an Eplan project.

Integrated connection diagrams and function templates provide the exact representation of complex devices and components. This ensures a smooth implementation due to the data being available in Eplan-ready format for immediate use in the project.

TLF 4277 Halves Car-Antenna Component-Count

Infineon Technologies AG has introduced a single-chip linear voltage regulator with integrated diagnosis and car-radio system protection functions. Designed for active antenna applications in automotive infotainment systems, the TLF 4277 low drop out (LDO) voltage regulator has adjustable output voltage to support the majority of standard active antennas, including FM/AM, DAB and the XM and Sirius satellite radio bands.

With its integrated current monitor and adjustable current limitation, the TLF 4277 enables a reduction in the number of discrete components for active antenna applications by approximately 50 per cent. More than 95 per cent of cars now feature active antennas for radio-programme reception. Active antennas are small enough to fit into the windscreen, front bumper or the stub antenna on the car's roof. According to current market researchers, about 52-55 million cars are expected to be produced globally in the year 2009.

On average, cars are typically equipped with two active antennas and so have two active-antenna voltage regulators. Infineon claims it is the first chip supplier in the world to produce a monolithic single-chip voltage regulator with integrated current monitor function for diagnosis and system protection as well as adjustable current limitation. The integration of the functions improves reliability of car radios.

The monitor function of the TLF 4277 allows easy detection of failures and simple integration of a failure-analysis function in an infotainment system. The AEC-Q100 qualified device is protected against failure situations, such as short-circuit of the output against ground or battery voltage, over-temperature and over-current. Infineon's TLF 4277 single-chip voltage regulator is available in high volumes. The device is RoHS compliant and comes in a SSOP-14 EP (exposed pad) package, providing an enhanced thermal performance.

Single-Component Epoxy Is Easy To Handle

Polymer System EP11HT is a single-component epoxy resin system from Master Bond for high-temperature bonding applications up to 205C. Master Bond EP11HT is a heat-curing, structural epoxy adhesive featuring high shear strength and easy handling. It is formulated to cure at elevated temperatures, for example 110min at 120C or 75min at 150C.

EP11HT attains tensile shear strengths in excess of 22.75MPa and forms rigid and dimensionally stable bonds. The service temperature range is -50 to +205C. As a one-part system, it does not require mixing prior to use and has an 'unlimited' working life at room temperature.

EP11HT bonds well to a wide variety of substrates including metals, glass, ceramics and most plastics. It has excellent resistance to a wide range of chemicals including acids, bases, oils, salts and many solvents. A nondrip version called EP11HTND-2 is also available. The cured adhesive fully meets the requirements of MIL-MMM-A-132. It is available in pint, quart, gallon and 5 gallon containers.
