Emerson Improves Chlorine Monitoring At DOW

DOW Benelux is using Emerson Process Management's total chlorine analysers to improve the monitoring and control of chlorine in cooling water prior to its return to the sea. The greater accuracy and speed of the new system enables easier compliance with environmental regulations. Maintenance costs have also been reduced as the amperometric sensor requires less checking and cleaning than the previously installed sensor. The DOW Terneuzen site has 23 plants producing plastics and chemicals.

The site is located on the southern shore of the Westerschelde estuary, from which it extracts sea water for cooling. To control the microbiological activity in the sea water - preventing blockages and fouling - minimal amounts of chlorine are dosed. The concentration of the chlorine must be precisely monitored and controlled before the water is returned to the estuary, to ensure compliance with environmental legislation. Emerson Process Management's Rosemount Analytical Model TCL sample-conditioning system replaced an existing DPD analyser system that was unreliable, had become outdated and was costly to run.

The DPD analyser relied on the measurement of colour change following the injection of a chemical reagent. Because of the impurities in the water, the accuracy of the measurement was poor and also an operator had to visit the analyser on a daily basis to either clean or reset it. Eric Engelen, of DOW Terneuzen's process analytical department, said: 'Measuring chlorine content in water from the Westerschelde is completely different from measuring chlorine in pool water. 'The water is salty and contains algae, mussels, seaweed and sand.

'This not only influences the accuracy and reliability of the measurement, but it meant that the old sensor had to be cleaned almost daily, leading to high maintenance costs,' he added. The Model TCL uses a reagent-based amperometric method to measure total chlorine. A potassium iodide solution injected into the sample reacts with total chlorine to produce iodine. The iodine diffuses through a membrane on the end of the sensor. An electrochemical reaction inside the sensor consumes the iodine and generates a current directly proportional to the diffusion rate.

The analyser measures the current and converts it into an equivalent total-chlorine concentration. This method of measuring chlorine is ideal for measuring water containing impurities and is better suited to the application at DOW. 'Water pollution and temperature changes don't influence the reliability of the sensor and because of the faster and more accurate and reliable measurements, we are now able to spot if there is something wrong with the chlorine content much earlier. 'This makes it easier for us to meet our legal requirements, which is better for the environment and prevents fines being incurred,' explained Engelen.

The previous analyser required a daily visit from an operator for it to be either reset or cleaned. The Model TCL doses air to assist in iodine formation; this creates a self-cleaning effect, meaning the sensor requires almost no additional cleaning. This leads to lower operational costs than for other sensor types. As well as the amperometric sensor, the Model TCL system includes Emerson's Rosemount Analytical model 1056 dual-input analyser. The 1056 analyser is easy to install and start up and its extensive diagnostic functions make it possible to monitor the status of the sensor and prevent any unplanned downtime.

Emerson Radar Transmitters Are Namur Recommended

Emerson has announced that the Rosemount 5300 Guided Wave Radar (GWR) and 5400 Non-Contacting Radar level transmitters have been tested in accordance with Namur NE 95 recommendations. The devices are included in the Namur database as approved devices.

The Rosemount transmitters successfully passed a range of third-party tests to determine whether their design and features complied with manufacturer's specifications, that they meet the requirements of any relevant standards and regulations, and that the equipment is suited for its intended use. Namur NE95 also includes testing for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) in accordance with Namur NE21 Version 22.09.2007 - Electromagnetic compatibility of industrial-process and laboratory equipment and IEC/EN 61326.

Namur NE 95 approval has been granted on the Hart and Foundation fieldbus versions of the Rosemount 5300 and 5400 transmitters. All Namur-qualified products, including those qualified to NE 95, are listed in the Namur database, providing member companies with access to an independent validation of specification and performance.

This removes the need to undertake any additional testing on qualified measurement devices. The Rosemount 5300 and 5400 series transmitters are two-wire devices for challenging level and interface measurements on liquids, slurries and solids.

Emerson Unveils Foundation Fieldbus Interfaces

Emerson Process Management has introduced Foundation Fieldbus interfaces for Controlwave RTUs and ROC800-series remote operations controllers. The Foundation Fieldbus interface is said to combine the benefits of Foundation Fieldbus with proven RTUs to reduce costs and increase efficiency in a range of oil and gas, water and wastewater applications.

It extends the power of Plantweb digital architecture beyond traditional plant walls, where environmental demands on power consumption, temperature range, physical size, and mounting footprint are important system design considerations. Operational performance is improved through the increased accuracy of digitally retrieved process data and diagnostic information provided to decision makers. Integrating the RTU and remote operations controllers into Plantweb architecture is said to provide enterprise-wide optimisation, instrument diagnostics, predictive maintenance scheduling, calibration, and reconfiguration.

The Foundation Fieldbus interface allows Controlwave and ROC800-series controllers to access multiple variables over a single pair of wires in a point-to-point or multi-drop configuration. The interface eliminates the need for technicians to cover hundreds of kilometres to configure and diagnose instrument problems in wide-area Scada networks. Installation and wiring costs are also reduced as centralising with fieldbus eliminates the need for extra hardware.

A Field Interface Configurator is said to make set-up and commissioning easier and faster. This software tool schedules, commissions, and creates data relationships between fieldbus devices and variables within the Controlwave or ROC800-series controller. The configurator is the only software tool needed to commission and deploy the Foundation Fieldbus interface.

Emerson Updates Fieldvue Digital Valve Controller

Emerson Process Management has introduced the latest version of its Fieldvue digital valve controller. The diagnostic capabilities of the DVC6000 Series instrument monitor valve performance, allowing plants to operate for between five and seven years between maintenance shutdowns.

That is an improvement compared to the traditional schedule of 12-18 months between shutdowns. The partial stroke testing capabilities of the DVC6000 ensure the readiness of shutdown valves.

According to the company, the partial stroke test technology has earned two patents, as well as Exida, TUV (Germany) and SIL-3 certification and approval. The instrument may also be installed via 'hot cutover', which facilitates the conversion from analogue to digital without interrupting the production process.

Emerson Announces Options For Guided Wave Radar

Emerson Process Management has enhanced the single probe offering of its Rosemount 5300 Series guided wave radar (GWR), extending its use into even more applications. The new options include a thicker rod for longer measurement lengths and a Hastelloy C-276 probe and wetted parts for applications in corrosive, hot and high-pressure environments.

The Rosemount 5300 Series features the company's patented Direct Switch Technology (DST), which makes it possible to use a single lead probe in more challenging applications. Combining the single lead probe with DST provides an accurate, reliable level measurement on low dielectric media and long measuring ranges, even for viscous media, according to Emerson. The single lead probe offers benefits over the coaxial or twin lead probes traditionally used for these applications, since the design is not susceptible to coating problems when used with viscous media.

The new, thicker 13mm probe is designed for an extended measurement range and is available in stainless steel for standard operating temperatures and pressures. The new Hastelloy C-276 probe and wetted parts option make the transmitter suitable for use in corrosive, hot and high-pressure environments. This enables the transmitter to be applied to oil-and-gas applications, including those where NACE (sulphide stress corrosion) materials are a requirement. C-276 alloy is also suitable for seawater duty and other fluids with a high chloride content.

Application examples in the chemical industry include reactors and solutions containing caustic and sulphuric acid. The Rosemount 5300 Series is suitable for the measurement of challenging level and interface measurements on liquids, slurries and solids. Its probe-guided radar signal, combined with its engineering, makes the 5300 virtually unaffected by process conditions and it has almost no installation restrictions. The range includes co-axial, twin lead, single lead and flexible type probes to cover a range of applications.

For installations with low dielectrics and long measuring ranges and where the media is highly viscous, thick or dirty, the single lead probe would normally be the preferred choice over coaxial and twin probes. This is because the coaxial and twin probe can be susceptible to product build between the inner and outer leads of the probe. Heavy coating or contamination can reduce the measuring range and may cause erroneous level readings, as well as increase the need for maintenance. The single probe has only one lead and is therefore not so susceptible to product build-up; however, signal strength can be an issue with a single lead design.

DST provides a signal to the transmitter, which is two to five times stronger than traditional GWR solutions. According to the company, this gives a better signal-to-noise ratio, improved operation in low dielectric media, including over longer measuring ranges, and a better margin to handle disturbing factors. These include objects close to the probe, coating, foam, vapour or turbulence. This means that the single lead probe design can manage most applications, including interface applications.

Emerson To Update Power-Plant Instrumentation

Emerson Process Management has been awarded a contract to update the instrumentation and controls on units 5 and 6 of the lignite-fired Belchatow Power Plant in Poland. The project will see Emerson serving as the main automation contractor, responsible for modernising the instrumentation, control and electrical subsystems.

Emerson will perform engineering and management services that include the installation of its Plantweb digital plant architecture with the Ovation expert control system. Using open Wirelesshart products, Emerson's Smart Wireless network will connect over 110 Rosemount wireless temperature transmitters that will monitor boiler temperatures on each unit. The complete retrofit project will enable the units to reach 320,000 hours of operation.

The project will contribute to emissions reductions from the two units, with CO2 and NOx both falling below 200mg/m3. Emerson will design, install and commission the digital automation system and perform various services on the units' electrical subsystems, such as the generator, transformers, feeder ducts and switchgear.

Emerson's Ovation system will monitor and control each unit's boiler and balance of plant processes and equipment, as well as the 0.4 and 6kV electrical switchgear and unit power output. In addition, it will interface with each unit's turbine control and thermal-protection systems. The Ovation system will oversee automatic boiler/unit start-up/shutdown and automatic unit operation within the full range of load changes.

Emerson Has Chambers For Control Instruments

Emerson Process Management has a range of high-quality chambers that allows external mounting of level measurement and control instrumentation on process vessels. The 9901 chamber range, which has been adapted and extended from the existing range of Mobrey chambers, offers a standardised fully PED (Piping Equipment Directive) compliant design in accordance with ASME B31.3, allowing customers to buy an integrated bolt-on instrument solution from Emerson, or simply a chamber for use with existing instrumentation.

External mounting of level instrumentation is often preferred by users as it allows easy isolation of the instrument for routine maintenance or calibration, plus offers the additional benefit of acting as a stilling chamber for liquid surfaces prone to turbulence or fitting of instrumentation to vessels with internal structures such as tube bundles

Using only certified and traceable materials, the 9901 series is manufactured using full penetration welds, with welders and welding procedures qualified to both ASME and European standards. All chambers are hydro tested on completion, with a full range of NDT or customer inspection options available to order.

While the standard range is extensive and offers a cost-effective solution, a custom design and build service is available for instances where the chamber must fit existing vessels or replace old products. Standard chambers are available in carbon steel or stainless steel in sizes of 80mm or 100mm diameters with centres of up to 6m. A wide choice of process, drain and vent connections is offered to minimise fitting costs. Other materials, including exotic alloys, are available on request.
