CBA Launches Safety Guidance For SPLI Use

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has made process safety in the major-hazards sector a priority. The HSE has reinforced the need to adopt procedures and monitoring systems that maximise the safety of operations, following feedback from the investigations into the Buncefield and Texas City incidents. In July 2009, CBA signed a commitment on behalf of its member companies to the 'principles of safety leadership'.

CBA and UKWA recognise that smaller businesses and warehouses have limited technical and managerial resources, and that their participation in any safety leadership initiative may vary in nature and time in different organisations. Many organisations rely on historical data, so-called lagging indicators, to monitor safety performance.

CBA has therefore, in partnership with UKWA, written and is now launching the 'Safety-performance leading indicators guidance' to enable successful implementation of SPLIs. While the implementation of SPLIs is being pushed by HSE for sites with a major-hazard potential, this approach can be applied throughout industry as a means of improving safety and maintaining business continuity.

The launch event covers identifying appropriate risk-control systems and the critical elements for monitoring, reporting and reviewing the data, through SPLIs, to provide earlier indications of hazards. Ian Travers, head of Chemical Industries Strategy Unit, will be speaking to enable companies to understand what is involved and the approach taken by HSE.

Emergency-Stop Pushbuttons Offer Enhanced Safety

Wieland Electric has introduced the SNH Series of emergency-stop pushbuttons, which includes a range of eight operator elements that can be combined with 12 different contact blocks. In addition to the modular components, Wieland supplies a number of completely assembled emergency-stop pushbuttons for the most common applications. For increased safety, Wieland's SNH Series of emergency-stop pushbuttons incorporate a contact block drop-off feature that provides a signal output should failure occur if the contact block becomes dislodged due to vibration.

This has an additional NO contact in series (pre-installed) to the main contacts - the NO contact opening as soon as the contact block falls off, thus interrupting the safety circuit and putting the machine into a safe position. An illuminated stop button also provides enhanced safety for the machine user. SNH pushbuttons are unlocked by rotation or with the use of a key and are supplied with or without a protective collar.

The pushbuttons offer a high degree of protection with an IP69 rating and the switching capability of the contacts is AC250V/16A. Wieland's SNH Series has been designed for use in conjunction with the company's 400 Series relays, SMA safety sensors and Samospro, a compact modular safety controller for machine and automation control.

BSIF Offers Health-And-Safety Advice For Companies

The British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) provides a range of health-and-safety advice for companies. Following recent high-profile cases in the news, the need for companies to comply with health-and-safety legislation has been highlighted. According to the federation, there is no room for complacency following the amendments to the Health and Safety Offences Act 2008, making individuals liable as well as companies. It is now more important than ever to get the correct advice and to know who to turn to for guidance.

The BSIF provides a single authoritative voice representing the views of the health-and-safety industry in both the UK and Europe. It is an association for the PPE Directive (as designated by BIS) and is recognised as a competent authority by the Health and Safety Executive. With its purpose to support and represent suppliers, the BSIF acts as an information source, providing direction in all health-and-safety matters, from legislation to personal protective equipment (PPE) and trustworthy suppliers to both its members and non-members.

The BSIF has already highlighted the problems created by substandard safety products and PPE available in the market and would like to see counterfeit and illegal products eliminated from the marketplace. There has been an increase in these rogue products and the federation claims that it can offer advice on products that are causing concern, including access to information to assist the identification of legitimate products. This can be helpful when using own-brand products, which may not originate from a main distributor.

IFM Safety Light Curtains Meet Latest Standards

IFM Electronic has introduced the OY series of safety light curtains, which meet the latest standards. The Machinery Directive, coming into force at end of this year, will require that equipment meets new standards, particularly where safety is concerned. The new standards are already met by IFM's light curtain range.

The range offers safety integrity levels to IEC 61508 and performance levels to ISO 13849. The light curtains and grids in the series are available as Type 2 or Type 4 to IEC 61496 in heights from 160mm to 1,510mm, covering a distance up to 12m. They come in a very slim housing, measuring only 28mm x 30mm, according to the company.

The beams are incorporated right up to the end of the housing, allowing installation without deadband. Available resolutions cover 30mm, 40mm, 50mm and 90mm in the light curtains, while the grids come with two, three or four beams. The series also features simple mounting and a range of accessories, including mirrors, relays for muting and vibration dampers. Connection is made via standard M12 connectors.

Safety Brake Rectifier Emits Constant DC Voltage

The Roba-multiswitch, developed for switching safety brakes quickly, is capable of emitting a constantly controlled DC voltage, independent of the mains voltage. This means that complex adaptation of magnetic coils to varying input voltages becomes unnecessary. Overexcitation on switch-on ensures that the connected brakes release extremely quickly.

Two designs are sufficient to cover all mains voltages worldwide, from 100 to 250V AC or 200 to 500V AC, and mains frequencies of 50 to 60Hz. The Roba-multiswitch for the mains voltage range from 200 up to 500V AC is conceived for the operation of safety brakes with 104V DC coils. The constant output voltage is produced using phase segment control. When switched on, the device temporarily (0 to 50ms) emits a bridge voltage, equalling 90 per cent of the applied mains voltage, rectified to the magnetic coil.

After this very short phase, a controlled overexcitation voltage of 180V DC is applied. The overexcitation time - up to the switchover to the operating voltage of 104V DC - can be selected via DIP switch to the levels 0.15s, 0.45s, 1s, 1.5s and 2s. The Roba-multiswitch for mains voltages of 100 to 250V AC works using a controlled overexcitation voltage of 90V DC. The selectable overexcitation times remain the same. The operating voltage (coil nominal voltage) is 52V DC.

Staubli Offers Quick-Release Safety Connectors

Staubli's safety connectors, which include high-flow and anti-scratch couplings, are suitable for use in various applications. Couplings for compressed-air applications are available in several configurations and materials of construction. The choice depends on the specific service requirements. The first decision in the selection of a quick-release coupling is choosing an appropriate design for the application involved.

There are four important factors to consider: environment, frequency of use, location and safety. Couplings used outdoors must be resistant to weather. Those made from copper alloys, malleable iron, stainless steel or aluminium last the longest; plated steel will rust. If the application involves physical abuse or a dirty environment, such as a foundry, the preferred choice would be connectors with no external moving parts, because they are not affected by dirt as much as those with movable sleeves.

Couplings are sized according to two factors; connection size determined by the hose or pipe fitting to which the coupling is connected, and nominal bore size determined by the required airflow. When using couplings with cleaning or dusting devices, the flow rate may not be critical. However, the majority of couplings are used with air tools that require a set pressure at the inlet; a typical plant compressor output is between seven and 10 bar and the amount of pressure drop allowed at the coupling is usually quite small.

How frequently a quick-connect coupling is used has a direct bearing on the type selected. Axial connect couplings are usually valved and can simply be disconnected. A rotary connect coupling has no valve mechanism. When the need for disconnect arises, the air must be shut off at the source. The most common wear points on valved quick-release couplings are the valve, springs and seals. For heavy-duty use, couplings without spring-loaded, poppet-type valves and with O-ring seals instead of flat washers should be considered.

The position or location of the coupling affects the selection process. If the coupling is at the end of a loose hose, most designs will do. When a coupling is located on a pipe or other fixed location, an automatic connect or zero-pressure type is convenient to use, because only one hand is required to connect or disconnect. When a coupling is located at the end of an overhead hose drop, a zero-pressure type is best because of the lower connection effort required and ease of disengagement without hose whip.

Since air is compressible, release of pressure on disconnection is accompanied by a rapid expansion of air from the unvalved half of the coupling. This release, similar to the action of a rocket engine, causes the hose, if unrestrained, to flail about with potential for injury. The larger the air volume contained in the hose, the more violent and sustained the action. Hose whip speeds up to 90mph have been recorded, and the plug attached to the hose becomes a dangerous projectile, capable of seriously injuring an operator's face or eyes.

A number of fatalities are recorded each year where hose whip is the cause. There are two ways to eliminate the problem of hose whip. The downstream coupling half - the plug - can be equipped with a ball check valve. When air is released at disconnect, the ball prevents the air from escaping rapidly. A disadvantage of this design is restricted airflow during use. A better alternative is to select a zero-pressure coupling, such as Staubli's RCS. This design automatically depressurises the downstream air volume as it shuts off the upstream supply.

By the time the coupling is disconnected, there is no residual air pressure remaining to cause hose whip. Staubli has several ranges of compressed-air, anti-hose-whip couplings that provide total safety on disconnecting or connecting under pressure. They are suitable for all types of compressed-air lines; typical applications include pneumatic tools, ring mains, press tools and test benches. The risk of hose whip is eliminated by Staubli's two-stage disconnection process, which conforms to all the requirements of the anti-hose-whip regulations in both BS EN 983 and ISO 4414.

Decompression is both automatic and instant. On RCS couplings, the first push on the disconnect button decompresses the downstream pressure without disconnecting the plug and without any risk to the user. The second push on the button safely releases the depressurised plug from the socket. This automatic connect and disconnect feature allows one-handed operation and there are additional options of a raised pushbutton for use in applications where remote manipulation is being performed or the operator is wearing gloves. Total operating safety is ensured since it is not possible to open the compressed-air circuit unless the plug is in the 'locked-in' position.

The safety device is integrated into the monobloc locking mechanism and cannot fail. Staubli's guarantee of leak-tight protection is due to the profile of both plug and socket; while other manufacturers only consider the socket profile, Staubli controls both plug and socket to give a high integrity, secure connection. RCS couplings are compact, lightweight and suitable for all compressed-air applications. The air-tight technology, robust construction and quality control ensure a long-lasting reliable coupling that Staubli is prepared to guarantee for five years in applications using a matched plug and socket.

A variant of the RCS connector is available in non-scratch, high-impact composite material with no external metallic parts. This is the ERS range, which is suitable for use in applications where any contact could cause scratches, typically in automotive paint and body shops, aircraft assembly and any industry working with the finished product such as furniture, domestic appliances and computers. Staubli ADS couplings allow unrestricted full flow, utilising a spherical valve that provides direct flow under full bore conditions, resulting in an optimal flow/pressure drop ratio.

The locking and isolating functions are separate. Pressure can be shut off from the tool without disconnecting the plug - a useful feature where pneumatic controls need to be deflated after use. A covering sleeve controls the air flow in the circuit on the ADS range, cutting off immediately and decompressing the system when pulled backwards to expose the release button for final disconnection. The sleeve completely covers the pushbutton release so there is no risk of accidental disconnection.

An additional safety device in the socket prevents the plug from being disconnected while the line is still open and the valve cannot be opened while the plug is removed. Typical applications are on larger air tools requiring a high flow supply and also for supplying pneumatic control machinery such as presses and production machines. Staubli has also introduced, for use on compressed-air lines, a 360deg swivel fitting that incorporates a double-action mechanism.

This mechanism allows full 360deg rotation around the centreline, combined with 90deg flexibility in the horizontal/vertical plane. The result is a greatly increased work envelope for the connected tool. This generation of swivel helps to reduce the risk of repetitive strain injury or white knuckle to the operator and also prevents damage to the work piece through any use of excessive force.

The swivel has been designed ergonomically to maximise operator efficiency, as it is incorporated directly in the socket. The design eliminates any risk of fold, break or rolling of the hose. It is lightweight and flexible as it is manufactured from aluminium and uses air-tight ball bearings. Other factors also affect the selection and use of couplings.

The effect of vibration or shock from tools can be minimised by using a 1m hose between the tool and coupling, preventing deformation of the plug by impact on the locking balls or pins or elongation of ball bodies in sockets. Couplings should be checked periodically for leaks in the coupled and uncoupled position. Compressed air leaks are expensive in terms of energy cost and excessive compressor capacity, typically 15-30 per cent of compressed air is lost by leakage between the compressor and the tool. A selection of O-ring seals fitted to Staubli connectors instead of washer seals provide a product that lasts longer and is leak free.

A selection of plugs is rarely given the same degree of attention that is allocated to sockets. Many users take the view that, within reason, any type of plug can be used with any socket. In theory this may be possible; in practice the use of unmatched pairs can seriously affect the performance, reliability and service life of the connector. Staubli, with its plug and socket profile, is prepared to guarantee connectors for five years, in applications using a matched plug and socket.

Tilt Sensor Aids Safety Critical Applications

Penny + Giles has launched a robust tilt sensor, STT500, for use in safety critical applications used on cranes and lifting platforms. A tilt sensor is an essential part of a safe load indicator (SLI) system on a crane, designed to alert the operator if the lift is exceeding the safe operating range of the machine.

The SLI measures the angle and extension of the boom along with the load weight, and calculates if the machine is working within the manufacturers suggested safety margins. Based on solid-state technology, the STT500 offers reliability, stability and compactness over fluid-based, electrolytic and pendulum operated sensors. It can operate from a 5V or 8-30V power source and has a measurement range of +/-10, +/-20, +/-30 or +/-60 with an output from 0.5 to 4.5V DC over the full inclination angle.

STT500 is supplied in a marine grade (LM6) cast aluminium alloy housing with 88mm diameter flange. It has a high environmental protection rating of IP69K to withstand the ingress of dust and fluids, even under high-pressure washing. The sensor has no moving parts and as a result has resistance to shock and vibration up to 20,000g. It can withstand operating temperatures of -40 to + 125C and has an EMC Immunity of 100V/m. For maximum flexibility, the sensor has a low power requirement of less than 6.5mA, so it can be used in hard-wired or battery-powered systems.

OEMs can fit their own cable through the supplied gland or use the supplied cable option. Alternatively, a circular M12 connector is available that can interface with industry standard sensor cables. The company's STT280, which has a smaller, moulded housing diameter of just 28mm, is also now available with +/-10, +/-20, +/-30 or +/-60 measurement range options.

Pressure Indicators Preserve Safety

Jofra IPIs can be used as a calibration reference or in applications where high-accuracy pressure measurement is required, from safety valve checks to system pressure verification. Ametek Calibration Instruments' Jofra range of industrial pressure indicators (IPIs) is now ATEX and CSA-certified for use in potentially explosive environments in the field or in calibration laboratories. ATEX is the primary intrinsically safe standard in the European Union, while CSA refers to relevant Canadian and USA standards.

Accurate to +/- 0.05% FS, the IPI can be used as a calibration reference or in applications where high-accuracy pressure measurement is required, from safety valve checks to system pressure verification. This new certification will allow the IPI to be used in any industry where there is a risk of flammable gases. These include oil refineries, offshore platforms, chemical plants, gas production plants, oil and gas shipping.

Intrinsically safe Jofra IPI indicators are available in 10 different pressure ranges. They combine the simplicity of an analogue gauge with the accuracy and easy to read display of a digital calibrator to provide versatile and easy to use units with a fast and straightforward setup, intuitive functions, application flexibility and a long battery life. An RS232 interface is supplied as standard which can be used for configuration, calibration and to transfer measurement data from the gauge.

It enables the Jofra IPI to be used as a pressure reference with JofraCAL software, which in turn provides control of a complete calibration procedure, storage of results and a calibration audit trail through hard-copy certificates. Once the gauge is configured, settings can be locked and password protected to prevent unauthorised changes.
