Canyonwest Packaging Offers Vibration Protection

Canyonwest Cases specialises in providing packaging for companies needing to ship or transport high-tech electronic equipment. Canyonwest Cases can design-in maximum protection against shock, vibration and moisture by combining custom-engineered foam inserts with rugged reusable cases.

Case inserts are designed for durability while meeting individual customer specifications and budgets. Canyonwest Cases custom foam inserts are fabricated from quality materials including polyester and polyethylene. Foam is available in multiple densities to provide the best protection.

Custom foam capabilities include the use of water jet cutting, steel rule die presses and CAD/CAM technology, resulting in consistent, accurate foam cuts every time.

Power Switches Are Optimised For USB Protection

Diodes Incorporated has introduced 0.5A single-channel power switches optimised for USB-port protection and other 3-5V hot-swap interconnects. The AP2145 (active low enable) and AP2155 (active high enable) provide complete protection solutions for consumer, computing and communication applications subject to the possibility of heavy capacitive loads and short circuits. The power switches are fully compliant with USB standards and are available in industry-standard SOP-8L and exposed-pad MSOP-8L-EP packages.

Their 10us transient response time prevents unnecessary system shutdown or restart, while their accurate 1A current limiting capability helps reduce system rail current requirements and related component costs. Offering reverse current blocking, over-current, over-temperature and short-circuit protection, as well as controlled rise time and under-voltage lockout, the AP21X5 parts are said to significantly improve the robustness of USB ports.

In addition, an inbuilt 7ms deglitch period on the flag output will prevent erroneous over-current reporting, without the need for any external components. UL and IEC60950-1CB scheme certified, the power switches are said to meet industry's most rigorous safety standards. Operating temperature rating is -40 to 85C and current consumption in shutdown mode is a maximum of 1uA.

PCB-Mount Power Supply Has IP64 Protection

Globtek has introduced its GT-91114 series of PCB-mount power supplies with double-enforced insulation mechanical configurations. Regulated outputs voltage range from 5V to 48V DC in 0.1V increments, up to 6W of continuous output power. The enclosed power supplies are potted in a 55.4mm x 52mm x 23.5mm impact resistant polycarbonate case with thermal conduction cooling.

The range features: regulated output with very low ripple; built-in protection features; universal input from 90-264V AC; safety agency requirements such as UL/cUL 1950/60601.1, TUV EN60950/60601.1; and EMI/RFI regulations compliance. It also complies with EMC Directives/CE and FCC Class B for ITE/medical applications. The power supplies are available with I/P and O/P lead wire options and Globtek said it can provide modified and custom designs. The GT-91114 series is offered with a five-year warranty.

Protection Devices Housed In Ultra-Small Package

ON Semiconductor has introduced two electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection devices housed in its ultra-small 0201 dual silicon no-lead (DSN-2) package. The DSN-style package, which measures 0.6mm x 0.3mm x 0.3mm, enables 100 per cent utilisation of the package area for active silicon. The company's first offerings in the package are the ESD11N5.0ST5G and ESD11B5.0ST5G, which are an expansion of its high-performance off-chip ESD protection portfolio.

By expanding its ESD protection portfolio into an ultra-small package, ON Semiconductor can offer devices that are suitable for safeguarding data lines in portable applications where board space is often extremely limited, such as mobile phones, MP3 players, PDAs and digital cameras. The ESD11N and ESD11B are the next generation of ESD protection technology from ON Semiconductor, which provides best in class clamping voltage. The reduced size and bidirectional single line designs provide ultimate flexibility and ease of routing to fit the products into a variety of space constrained applications.

The ESD11N is a 0.6pF device that utilises integrated ESD technology from ON Semiconductor to enhance clamping performance while maintaining low capacitance. The low capacitance value ensures that this device has negligible impact on the signal integrity of high-speed data lines making it suitable for applications such as USB 2.0 and HDMI. In addition, the ESD11N maintains less than 0.5dB insertion loss up to 3GHz and excellent capacitance linearity over voltage and frequency, making it suitable for protecting high-frequency antenna lines with minimal effects.

The ESD11B is a 15pF device that expands ON Semiconductor low clamping ESD protection technology into the 0201 DSN-2 package to provide a protection option for general purpose and low-speed data lines that have tight board designs with limited space. Both ESD products clamp an input ESD waveform of 8kV per the IEC61000-4-2 contact standard, to less than 10V in a matter of nanoseconds. This clamping voltage performance ensures protection for the most sensitive integrated circuits. ON Semiconductor is also developing Schottky diodes in the 0201 DSN-2 package that are scheduled to be released later this month.

Megger Unveils Protection Relay Test Set

Megger has introduced the Freja 306 protection relay test set. It provides an economical system for testing protection relays, including differential types, and has six independently controlled current outputs. The Freja 306 features extended Hi-Current outputs, rugged construction and a wide operating temperature range, making it ideal for field use.

It is suitable for use as a stand-alone device, or in conjunction with a PC running the Freja WIN software package. In either case, the operation of the instrument is straightforward and intuitive, with Freja WIN adding the benefits of a highly intuitive graphical user interface, as well as enhanced options for automated testing. The outputs of the Freja 306 can be configured as 3 x 15A plus 3 x 35A, or as 1 x 100A.

The outputs with a 35A rating are particularly useful when testing 5A relays, while the capability of these outputs of generating up to 50V eases the testing of many types of electromechanical relay. The Freja 306 also provides low-level analogue inputs, designed for transducer measurements, and high-level inputs for normal voltage and current measurements.

Static and dynamic tests can be performed with the instrument including, for example, pre-fault and fault generation, simultaneous ramping of multiple quantities and waveform editing. The Freja 306 can also be used, in conjunction with Freja SIM software, as a disturbance simulator with the capability of importing recorded disturbances.

It complements the Freja 300 protective relay test set, which will continue to be available. Users of Freja 300 instruments can upgrade them to the full Freja 306 specification simply by adding an auxiliary CA30 amplifier module that attaches easily and neatly to the bottom of the instrument.
