Telegan Launches Flue-Gas Analysis Package

Telegan, part of Crowcon, has launched a range comprising a flue-gas analyser, a differential thermometer, a differential manometer, a gas escape detector and a carbon-monoxide room-safety monitor. The Sprint V range, which consists of the five instruments in one small, handheld unit, is designed to assist heating engineers in the safe installation, commissioning and servicing of boilers and combustion systems.

The instruments are manufactured and distributed by Telegan Gas Monitoring and are distributed in the UK through the company's exclusive industry partner, Anton Industrial Services. The package includes the basic Sprint V2 unit with the features already mentioned; the Sprint V3, which has all the functions of the V2 but is also Bluetooth enabled for rapid data transfer; the Sprint V4, which is similar to the V2 but has additional nitric-oxide (NO and NOx) capabilities; and the Sprint V5, which has all the functions of the V4 while also being Bluetooth enabled.

The entire Sprint V range features Smart Purge technology, which clears potentially acidic gases from the unit. This helps save battery, pump and filter life, enables intelligent purging for switch-on and switch-off and allows the purging of gas while other tests are being carried out.

Gast Group Offers Iseries Compressed Air Package

The Gast Group has extended its Jun-Air range of oil-free compressors with the launch of the Iseries self-contained compressed air package. The Iseries consists of a rocking piston compressor and an air receiver and has fewer moving parts to help reduce wear.

The fully automatic package, which needs no installation, is designed for continuous operation and is ready to operate straight from the box. It can be placed directly at the point of use, wherever a reliable source of compressed air is required. The three compressors in the Iseries range offer pulse-free airflow rates from 3.17 to 6.35cfm (90 to 180m3/h), a maximum pressure rating of 100psi (7 bar), tank sizes from four to 25 litres (1.1 to 6.6 gallons) and motor outputs from 0.33 to 0.67HP (0.25 to 0.50kW).

Like all Jun-Air oil-free compressors, the Iseries is vibration-free and operates at 66dB(A) as a free-standing unit. Receivers are internally powder-coated to resist corrosion and ensure optimum air quality, and other features include manual drain. All units are supplied with a two-year warranty.

WEG Motor-Control Package For Oman Oil Field

WEG motor-control packages comprise low-maintenance motors, ruggedised CFW-09 inverter drives and direct-on-line (DOL) starting controls. These packages are helping En-Fab to achieve production targets in a major steam-injection recovery project undertaken to help Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) reverse Oman's declining oil production. En-Fab was contracted by PDO to design and install 100-million-BTU steam generators in the Omani oil field.

To date, WEG has delivered 34 motor-control systems to En-Fab to control multiple motors on the oilfield. Each system comprises WEG's CFW-09 Series variable frequency (VF) drives and customised control packages with direct-on-line (DOL) starting. This equipment helps run the main and booster pumps that supply water to the steam generators, as well as the large fans for combustion air to the burner assembly. En-Fab has requested other equipment vendors to supply two- and four-pole WEG motors on their equipment to complement the use of the WEG VF drives and controls.

'It's the ruggedness and the ability to operate at differing voltages and frequencies that has ensured the specification of WEG products for this project,' said Michael Smith, WEG's automation sales engineer. 'The WEG CFW-09 series of VF drives features Vectrue Technology and is among the world's most advanced technology for use with three-phase AC induction motors. He added: 'The series provides users with the benefits of software selectable V/F, sensorless vector and closed-loop vector (with encoder) control techniques in one product.

Microchip Offers Miniature Microcontroller Package

Microchip has added a new member to its eight- and 14-pin PIC16F61X 8-bit PIC microcontroller (MCU) range, targeting cost-effective general-purpose applications. The PIC12F617 MCU features 3.5Kbyte of self-programmable Flash program memory (with a self-read-write capability) and peripherals such as a 10-bit analogue-to-digital converter (ADC), a comparator, a pulse-width modulator (PWM) and a VREF for closed-loop-control applications - all in a miniature 3 x 3mm DFN package.

The Flash programmable memory with a self-read-write capability serves as a low-cost alternative to data EEPROM and is useful when an application requires remote updates or the ability to store system data or look-up tables. The MCU features an 8MHz internal oscillator, an on-chip four-channel 10-bit ADC, a comparator with hysteresis and a PWM with complementary outputs that provide a framework for applications such as light-emitting-diode control, motor control, capacitive touch keys and system monitors.

Microchip has also announced a price reduction on the rest of the PIC16F61X members, including the PIC12F609, PIC12F615, PIC16F610 and PIC16F616 MCUs and their corresponding high-voltage variants. Microchip's complete suite of standard development tools can be used with the PIC12F617 MCU, including the free MPLAB IDE, along with the Hi-Tech C compiler for PIC12 MCUs.

The Hi-Tech Lite edition is a free, fully functional compiler with no time limitations. The MPLAB ICD eight- and 14-pin debugging header (part number AC162083, priced at USD35 or GBP22) is required for debugging the PIC16F616 and PIC12F617 devices.

EMKA Offers Quarter-Turn Locks In Mini Package

EMKA's 1022 programme quarter-turn locks or 'mini-locks' have the same capabilities as the larger versions but in a miniature package. The mini-locks are suitable for small cabinets, wall-mount enclosures, access panels or other housings. They are useful where space and design limitations demand easy operation as well as a good level of rugged serviceability, according to the company.

The 1022 programme locks are also available with additional sealing rings for applications where protection to IP65 is important; for heavy dust environments, a special dust cap can further improve the sealing capability. The mini-locks are quick to fit and feature either a standard 14mm square hole for nut fixing or a 15 x 18mm double-D hole suitable for spring fix lock bodies, thus enabling quick installation in production situations (not to IP65).

In order to cover a range of operational needs, the 1022 programme can be supplied with cylinder locks/inserts to take square or triangular keys or slotted for screwdriver opening. The wing-knob design is often preferred as it enables a greater turning/closure force for improved gasket pull-down and enhanced sealing. EMKA claims that the wing-knob style also offers easier operation, such as for gloved hands.

The lock types are complemented by standard cams, which allow installers to adapt to varying door/frame depths and gasket thicknesses ranging from 7.55mm up to 19.5mm in depth. The company offers the 1022 programme in zinc die with a black powder coat or a chrome finish, as well as in stainless steel or in reinforced polyamide.

Open Mind CAD Package Has More Display Options

Open Mind Technologies has developed new intelligent functions for its HyperCAD 2009.1 package. The 3D CAD system includes new display options for improved transparency, increased system performance and better quality control.Project-specific CAD environments can now be created using templates and Hyper Reshape functions allow users to directly process STL data models.

HyperCAD 2009.1 is a comprehensive CAD environment with solutions for tool and mould construction. Tools for electrode production or for controlling wire EDM are available as optional extras. HyperCAD allows models to be generated from 2D or 3D drawings and also performs as a tool for manufacturing-oriented constructions for CAM programming and optimising model data. A range of interfaces for numerous data formats including neutral interfaces such as Step or IGES and direct interfaces to Catia V4, Catia V5, Solidworks, NX or Pro/Engineer, ensure flexibility and reliability when dealing with external data.

The Hyper Reshape function allows STL data to be processed or modified and makes it possible to close holes, reduce STL networks and create boundaries. Subcontractors will benefit from the hybrid processing of surfaces, solids and STL data that facilitates data exchange and cuts the number of CAD systems required. Whether the user is working with a 2D drawing or a 3D model, native or imported data, a solid or a surface model, points or curves, the model can be designed and existing models altered without any limitations.

HyperCAD 2009.1 also ensures faster graphical display in the 2D area with improved quality control and more transparency due to new functions for displaying models on the screen. Functions include shadowed view, the full-screen mode and additional options for detailed display. The assembly function and colour management for individual components facilitates the assembly of modules. There is also the option to create templates for project-specific CAD environments, which saves time for the user as project-specific settings such as layer, title block or colours are predefined when the program starts up.

The version-comparison function checks the design for differences and displays any that are found using colour coding, allowing the different stages of construction to be easily checked and analysed when versions have been changed. An automatic backup file can then be created using the autosave function. Associativity is guaranteed because HyperCAD and Hypermill ensure that CAD and CAM software draw on a common database.

If the CAD model is ever changed, the changes are also automatically reflected in the CAM software, so changes can be implemented quickly and the entire process benefits from time-efficient, automated programming and a reduced number of errors. The design process is simplified by intelligent functions, such as surface feedback (Auto Patching) to STL meshes, surface repair, the generation of parting lines and draft geometry, and shrinkage compensation. Smart Objects technology in HyperCAD also allows users to save and reuse standard and custom-defined intelligent-design elements and concepts.

When applied, these adjust to the different topologies and geometric data automatically. Using the function for completing surfaces, users can continuously or tangentially extend or close off open areas with fill surfaces, quickly add in missing areas and link any surface to other components. This creates a suitable environment for the generation of error-free milling paths.

Protection Devices Housed In Ultra-Small Package

ON Semiconductor has introduced two electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection devices housed in its ultra-small 0201 dual silicon no-lead (DSN-2) package. The DSN-style package, which measures 0.6mm x 0.3mm x 0.3mm, enables 100 per cent utilisation of the package area for active silicon. The company's first offerings in the package are the ESD11N5.0ST5G and ESD11B5.0ST5G, which are an expansion of its high-performance off-chip ESD protection portfolio.

By expanding its ESD protection portfolio into an ultra-small package, ON Semiconductor can offer devices that are suitable for safeguarding data lines in portable applications where board space is often extremely limited, such as mobile phones, MP3 players, PDAs and digital cameras. The ESD11N and ESD11B are the next generation of ESD protection technology from ON Semiconductor, which provides best in class clamping voltage. The reduced size and bidirectional single line designs provide ultimate flexibility and ease of routing to fit the products into a variety of space constrained applications.

The ESD11N is a 0.6pF device that utilises integrated ESD technology from ON Semiconductor to enhance clamping performance while maintaining low capacitance. The low capacitance value ensures that this device has negligible impact on the signal integrity of high-speed data lines making it suitable for applications such as USB 2.0 and HDMI. In addition, the ESD11N maintains less than 0.5dB insertion loss up to 3GHz and excellent capacitance linearity over voltage and frequency, making it suitable for protecting high-frequency antenna lines with minimal effects.

The ESD11B is a 15pF device that expands ON Semiconductor low clamping ESD protection technology into the 0201 DSN-2 package to provide a protection option for general purpose and low-speed data lines that have tight board designs with limited space. Both ESD products clamp an input ESD waveform of 8kV per the IEC61000-4-2 contact standard, to less than 10V in a matter of nanoseconds. This clamping voltage performance ensures protection for the most sensitive integrated circuits. ON Semiconductor is also developing Schottky diodes in the 0201 DSN-2 package that are scheduled to be released later this month.

Thermo Fisher Releases Mass Frontier 6.0 Package

Thermo Fisher Scientific has launched Mass Frontier 6.0: a software package offering sophisticated features for the management, evaluation and interpretation of mass spectra. The software is applicable to small-molecule structural elucidation in a range of applications, including metabolite identification and impurity analysis in drug-discovery and toxicology studies.

Providing comprehensive spectral data and fragmentation mechanism knowledge management, this new version of Mass Frontier facilitates structural elucidation by simplifying the interpretation of MSn spectral data. The software will be showcased at the Thermo Scientific hospitality suite at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown in Salons G-K during ASMS, which runs from 31 May to 4 June in Philadelphia. Mass Frontier 6.0 includes several software tools for processing and organising mass spectral and chromatographic data.

Providing a platform to determine structure, properties and class membership of small molecules, the software offers users fast access to useful information, providing them with the data they need to make decisions. A capability of Mass Frontier is its copyrighted Fragmentation Library, which contains fragmentation mechanisms for small molecules. These mechanisms have been collated from all available printed media dedicated to mass spectrometry.

Each mechanism, along with the chemical structures, is manually and automatically verified and saved in the library, along with complementary information such as the title, authors and the source. The library collection, together with 24 general ionisation, fragmentation and rearrangement rules, serves as a knowledge base for the prediction of fragmentation pathways from user-provided structures. With Mass Frontier 6.0, the Fragmentation Library now covers almost all published literature, allowing users to quickly search thousands of entries, eliminating the time lost to a manual literature search.

The library, along with Mass Frontier's predictive fragmentation tool and automatic spectral annotation, is intended to simplify the structural elucidation of mass spectral data. In addition to the literature-based Fragmentation Library, Mass Frontier 6.0 also allows users to create their own library of customised fragmentation mechanisms and is able to learn these mechanisms and apply them to predict fragments. The new version also offers SQL client-server capabilities for dynamic library searching and storage, which is intended to increase productivity by allowing multiple users to share access to the libraries and to manage knowledge more effectively.

Additionally, Mass Frontier provides expert-annotated spectral libraries in both positive and negative ionisation modes from common pharmaceutical compounds and human metabolites. These libraries establish an empirical knowledge database applicable to pharmacology and toxicology studies. The software features intelligent knowledge management systems with a flexible database structure, allowing heterogeneous data (spectrum, spectral tree, structure, fragmentation mechanism and experimental conditions) to be stored, transferred and queried in and between libraries.

MSn spectral trees acquired from Thermo Scientific ion trap products can be automatically deconvoluted in Mass Frontier, which assists in data comparison. The Fragment Ion Search (FISh) function provides fast screening for structurally similar compounds through filtering a list of fragments acquired either by theoretical fragment prediction or by experimental MSn spectral trees.

The product complements Thermo Scientific Metworks metabolite identification software for the study of biotransformations and Sieve differential analysis software for the study of metabolomics. The new version of the software is also fully compatible with high-resolution accurate-mass data from the Thermo Scientific LTQ Orbitrap family of products. The software streamlines data processing and boosts confidence in analytical results, according to the company. Fragmentation Library and Mass Frontier are trademarks of Highchem.
