Two Basic Options For Upgrading IT Capabilities

Manufacturers looking to efficiently upgrade their IT capabilities and gain access to new business application functionality have two basic options available, according to Magic Software Enterprises. They can either sign up with a software-as-a-service (SaaS) vendor or they can develop their system in house using custom software. The SaaS option is on the rise as the market continues to swing towards the integration of 'services' and 'information'. This 'service industrialisation' is personified by the SaaS business model, which meets business functionality needs with a measurable, buyable commodity that is available on the open market.

According to the company, SaaS is the ultimate playing field 'leveller', enabling small manufacturers to achieve the same operational efficiency of big players with big IT budgets, developing custom-made ERP and CRM systems. With all that said, however, there remains a significant advantage to building manufacturing applications in house. While SaaS provides a fast and easy way to obtain the IT capabilities needed, it remains, by its very nature, a one-size-fits-all solution, with little or no room for customisation to fit the specific business processes in some manufacturing enterprises.

If manufacturers are looking for very specific functionality - which does not leave them dependent upon the continued existence of their SaaS vendor - there is a good argument for opting for custom software development. That argument can be made even stronger if the cost of custom development can be reduced and the end result made more adaptable to changing business demands and the needs of a mobile workforce. The development of rich internet applications (RIAs) solves some of these issues. Manufacturers that have implemented custom RIA systems report a number of benefits.

First, RIAs are inherently mobile; the user has access to his or her main ERP or CRM system from anywhere, as long as there is internet connectivity. This is particularly beneficial for manufacturing organisations since this industry typically has work operations and staff that cannot be tied to a static desk or workstation. RIAs enable shop-floor operations and inventory staff and managers to work on the move and still have instant access to the core CRM or ERP system of the organisation. Second, one of the main advantages of RIAs is that they are, by nature, 'rich' - this means better user interfaces and improved functionality, typically including dashboards with moving graphs that can display histories and up-to-date inventory levels, sales figures and orders.

This can help improve decision making, reduce product costs, better identify bottlenecks and anticipate shortages and improve lean-manufacturing procedures. Third, manufacturing industries require fast and up-to-date inventory data and a real-time view of work in progress; RIAs can provide real-time tracking and batch item monitoring, including radio-frequency identification, barcodes and other tracking systems, helping manufacturers to more efficiently and effectively manage their manufacturing processes. In addition, RIAs can pull data from multiple data warehouses and systems and present that information on a single screen or a reduced number of screens, with screens that can be opened and viewed simultaneously with visualisation capabilities as well as drill-down and scroll-down capabilities, enabling staff and management to view more detailed information as required.

Another advantage is that custom-designed RIAs accessing local data warehouses can be optimised for master item synchronisation, potentially saving organisations millions. All in all, the benefits of custom-writing RIAs present some significant advantages for manufacturers. That is, of course, until the user starts writing; then, he or she realises that developing an RIA that features internet accessibility with the power and functionality of a desktop application involves system complexity. Custom RIA development can be prohibitive to many manufacturers because the sophistication of the software requires two kinds of programmers: RIA programmers for the client-side user interface and traditional business logic programmers for the back-end server application.

Maintaining two development teams is not cheap, fast or easy, hence the attraction of the SaaS option. However, this issue can now be resolved with a new approach to RIA development that pre-compiles and pre-configures the heavy code-writing processes into ready-made business application engines - or metadata engines. Application platforms that make use of metadata engines, such as Magic Software's Unipaas, allow a single programmer to create and deploy the entire business application from end to end, without the need for multiple programming languages or multiple development teams.

With a simpler coding process and fewer specialised skills required to design and implement changes, manufacturers can also more easily custom change their applications as their business needs evolve. Metadata-driven application platforms can reduce typical RIA development costs by up to 75 per cent, making RIA competitively viable for smaller manufacturers and those with lower IT budgets. Metadata application platforms allow RIAs to become a viable, economic alternative to SaaS for a large number of manufacturing companies. Manufacturers can retain their customised, mission-critical applications in house, while avoiding the IT expenses associated with conventional RIA development and deployment.

Open Mind CAD Package Has More Display Options

Open Mind Technologies has developed new intelligent functions for its HyperCAD 2009.1 package. The 3D CAD system includes new display options for improved transparency, increased system performance and better quality control.Project-specific CAD environments can now be created using templates and Hyper Reshape functions allow users to directly process STL data models.

HyperCAD 2009.1 is a comprehensive CAD environment with solutions for tool and mould construction. Tools for electrode production or for controlling wire EDM are available as optional extras. HyperCAD allows models to be generated from 2D or 3D drawings and also performs as a tool for manufacturing-oriented constructions for CAM programming and optimising model data. A range of interfaces for numerous data formats including neutral interfaces such as Step or IGES and direct interfaces to Catia V4, Catia V5, Solidworks, NX or Pro/Engineer, ensure flexibility and reliability when dealing with external data.

The Hyper Reshape function allows STL data to be processed or modified and makes it possible to close holes, reduce STL networks and create boundaries. Subcontractors will benefit from the hybrid processing of surfaces, solids and STL data that facilitates data exchange and cuts the number of CAD systems required. Whether the user is working with a 2D drawing or a 3D model, native or imported data, a solid or a surface model, points or curves, the model can be designed and existing models altered without any limitations.

HyperCAD 2009.1 also ensures faster graphical display in the 2D area with improved quality control and more transparency due to new functions for displaying models on the screen. Functions include shadowed view, the full-screen mode and additional options for detailed display. The assembly function and colour management for individual components facilitates the assembly of modules. There is also the option to create templates for project-specific CAD environments, which saves time for the user as project-specific settings such as layer, title block or colours are predefined when the program starts up.

The version-comparison function checks the design for differences and displays any that are found using colour coding, allowing the different stages of construction to be easily checked and analysed when versions have been changed. An automatic backup file can then be created using the autosave function. Associativity is guaranteed because HyperCAD and Hypermill ensure that CAD and CAM software draw on a common database.

If the CAD model is ever changed, the changes are also automatically reflected in the CAM software, so changes can be implemented quickly and the entire process benefits from time-efficient, automated programming and a reduced number of errors. The design process is simplified by intelligent functions, such as surface feedback (Auto Patching) to STL meshes, surface repair, the generation of parting lines and draft geometry, and shrinkage compensation. Smart Objects technology in HyperCAD also allows users to save and reuse standard and custom-defined intelligent-design elements and concepts.

When applied, these adjust to the different topologies and geometric data automatically. Using the function for completing surfaces, users can continuously or tangentially extend or close off open areas with fill surfaces, quickly add in missing areas and link any surface to other components. This creates a suitable environment for the generation of error-free milling paths.

Emerson Announces Options For Guided Wave Radar

Emerson Process Management has enhanced the single probe offering of its Rosemount 5300 Series guided wave radar (GWR), extending its use into even more applications. The new options include a thicker rod for longer measurement lengths and a Hastelloy C-276 probe and wetted parts for applications in corrosive, hot and high-pressure environments.

The Rosemount 5300 Series features the company's patented Direct Switch Technology (DST), which makes it possible to use a single lead probe in more challenging applications. Combining the single lead probe with DST provides an accurate, reliable level measurement on low dielectric media and long measuring ranges, even for viscous media, according to Emerson. The single lead probe offers benefits over the coaxial or twin lead probes traditionally used for these applications, since the design is not susceptible to coating problems when used with viscous media.

The new, thicker 13mm probe is designed for an extended measurement range and is available in stainless steel for standard operating temperatures and pressures. The new Hastelloy C-276 probe and wetted parts option make the transmitter suitable for use in corrosive, hot and high-pressure environments. This enables the transmitter to be applied to oil-and-gas applications, including those where NACE (sulphide stress corrosion) materials are a requirement. C-276 alloy is also suitable for seawater duty and other fluids with a high chloride content.

Application examples in the chemical industry include reactors and solutions containing caustic and sulphuric acid. The Rosemount 5300 Series is suitable for the measurement of challenging level and interface measurements on liquids, slurries and solids. Its probe-guided radar signal, combined with its engineering, makes the 5300 virtually unaffected by process conditions and it has almost no installation restrictions. The range includes co-axial, twin lead, single lead and flexible type probes to cover a range of applications.

For installations with low dielectrics and long measuring ranges and where the media is highly viscous, thick or dirty, the single lead probe would normally be the preferred choice over coaxial and twin probes. This is because the coaxial and twin probe can be susceptible to product build between the inner and outer leads of the probe. Heavy coating or contamination can reduce the measuring range and may cause erroneous level readings, as well as increase the need for maintenance. The single probe has only one lead and is therefore not so susceptible to product build-up; however, signal strength can be an issue with a single lead design.

DST provides a signal to the transmitter, which is two to five times stronger than traditional GWR solutions. According to the company, this gives a better signal-to-noise ratio, improved operation in low dielectric media, including over longer measuring ranges, and a better margin to handle disturbing factors. These include objects close to the probe, coating, foam, vapour or turbulence. This means that the single lead probe design can manage most applications, including interface applications.

BCT Extends Resolution HMI SBC Options

Blue Chip Technology (BCT) has followed up the launch of its Resolution HMI single-board computer kit with the release of a supporting Linux BSP and the addition of a 7in LCD module. Released in June 2009, Resolution has generated interest from the instrumentation, multimedia and mobile markets.

Comprising the RE1 single-board computer, mounting, interfacing and range of display options - Resolution offers the design engineer the basic building blocks needed for a versatile embedded HMI module. The usual cabling, signalling and power issues of integrating a display and embedded board are all managed within the design, which guarantees long-term availability and problem-free fit, form and function upgrades.

Working with the Linux community, Blue Chip has released a RE1 BSP that includes all the tools and guidance to kick-start a Linux-based embedded project - a Linux kernel, root file system, Yamon bootloader and sample configurations. Additionally, Blue Chip has added a 7in 800 x 480 resolution widescreen LCD to its range of display options, further increasing the versatility of the whole Resolution HMI package.

Combi Light Provides Lighting Options In 20mm Unit

Oxley Developments has brought out a multi-functional light that provides different lighting options from within a single 20mm-high unit. The low-profile Combi Light offers normal, emergency and blackout lighting modes. It is suitable for military shelters, forward-command positions and ground-control stations. It is suitable for use in applications where space and height restrictions, light leakage and durability are key concerns.

The standard white mode delivers crystal-clear illumination and incorporates a dimming function to suit individual environments. The Combi Light's emergency mode utilises separate LEDs powered by a rechargeable battery and provides more than 45 minutes of illumination when fully charged. The red blackout mode is triggered by signal and the LED technology eliminates unwanted residual glare. This is important in scenarios where shelters are positioned in potentially hostile terrain.

Other colour options are also available. Packaging this additional functionality within a single low-profile unit removes the need for separate lighting fixtures. The use of LEDs ensures maintenance-free deployment with a minimum working life of 50,000 hours. The absence of mercury allows for safe disposal. The lights are sealed to IP64 and have CE marking. They utilise a 100/230V universal AC input.

The Combi Light is part of a portfolio of area-lighting products being developed by Oxley. These products include standard white mode flat lights for shelters and field hospitals, tent lights and miniature floodlights for vehicle interiors. Oxley is also developing a smaller version of the Combi Light to suit more restricted shelter environments. Oxley will exhibit its area-lighting products at DVD 2009, which will take place at Millbrook on 24-25 June.

Calibration Toolbox ADO Offers 2 Database Options

Calibration Toolbox ADO is user-friendly and configurable calibration management software that is designed to run on Windows XP, Vista and above. Calibration Toolbox ADO users methods such as ActiveX Database Object (ADO) technology to bring the power of Microsoft Windows to calibration management processes. It complies fully with the requirements of 21 CFR Part 11 and also meets the standards of ISO 17025 and GLP/GMP.

Also available is a Software Validation Pack that will enable validation of installation to FDA standards. Calibration Toolbox ADO offers two database options to suit requirements and current database infrastructure: Microsoft SQL-Server and Microsoft JET (Access). Calibration Toolbox ADO - Lite is a free fully-working version of the software but is limited to a maximum of 100 entries.

There is no time limit or evaluation period. This version enables users new to computerised calibration management to explore the possibilities that Calibration Toolbox ADO offers. It is also ideal for users with a limited number of devices that are calibrated to rigorous standards.
