Bearings Cut Stress On Ship Structure

Bearings from Trelleborg Bakker improve FPSO manoeuvreability and safety. One of company's most complex projects was the supply of 42 specially designed bearings for the Sea Rose. Constructed of steel and rubber, these compensated for the flexing of the hull, lowering the stresses on the ship's structure.

As floating production storage offloading (FPSO) vessels travel further offshore to extract oil and gas, the demands on them become greater. They need to house more large pieces of machinery such as compressors and pumps. Weighing considerable amounts, these can create significant stresses on the vessel, affecting manoeuvreability and safety.

This effect is intensified by the potential severe weather conditions of deeper waters, with increased forces from waves and wind. Another complication is that the tonnage of the ship constantly changes as oil is pumped in and then offloaded to tankers. Trelleborg Bakker, an operating unit of Trelleborg Engineered Systems, has worked with leading FPSO fabricators and operators since the inception of these floating rigs.

Machinery fitted to FPSOs is commonly installed on Trelleborg Bakker bearings. These, constructed of steel and rubber, compensate for the flexing of the hull, lowering the stresses on the ship's structure. One of Trelleborg Bakker's most complex projects was the fitment of the Sea Rose. This required the installation of 42 bearings in three special designs. Each of them over 2m high and the heaviest weighing close to 10 tons, they can withstand exceptional load vertically up to 10,000kN and horizontally up to 3500kN. They are also capable of compensating for distortions up to 75mm. The Trelleborg Bakker bearings fitted on the Sea Rose are proving successful in her assignment extracting oil off the coast of Newfoundland in Canada. Technology developed for this project and others globally, allows Trelleborg Bakker to offer cost-effective bearing solutions for frames a secondO vessels worldwide.

Addon Expands Servo Controller I/O

QuickSilver Controls has developed a simple 24V breakout that can be attached directly to the SMI port of a SilverDust MG, IG, IGF, IGC or IG8 servomotor controller, providing access to power, communications (RS232/485) and I/O. The breakout also converts the controller's TTL level I/O to five 24V isolated inputs and two 24V open collector outputs.

With a list price of US $75, this breakout is an easy way of adding extra 24V I/O to a SilverDust controller.

Connector Offers Performance/Price Compromise

Hansford Sensors has selected an alternative 12mm connector style, the M12, as offering the best combination of performance and price. The result - today, you can specify either the standard MS series or the M12 Connector on most of their range of vibration sensors. The main advantages of the M12 connector are its smaller size and the fact that its associated cable assemblies have a tighter bend radius.

It is a well accepted and proven connector used across many industries including process control, automation and sensing. They are particularly suitable for use in vibration monitoring equipment, the IP67/68 sealing making them usable in difficult environmental conditions often found in maintenance condition monitoring applications. With its wide use in industrial electronic equipment, the cost-effective connectors and numerous cable assemblies are readily available from electrical distributors worldwide making off the shelf delivery a reality.

Hansford Sensors has applied the connectors across the HS-100, HS-100S, HS-420 and HS-421 series of vibration sensors. All models are constructed in robust welded stainless steel and offer either top or side entry for the electrical connection. The M12 mating connector is available in both a straight or right-angle version. The HS-100 sensors are industrial accelerometers offering a 100mV/g AC output with a top entry connection, whilst the HS-100S is a low profile unit with a side entry connection.

The HS-420 is a PLC accelorometer with integral circuitry providing a 4-20mA output proportional to the velocity level. The HS-421 model offers a dual output of 4-20mA for velocity and AC g suited for the many commercially available data collectors. For those needing to measure both vibration and temperature levels at the same monitoring point, Hansford Sensors has also introduced dual-output versions of the HS-100T (100mV/g output) and the HS-420T (4-20mA output) sensor models, both fitted with M12 connectors as standard.

Brushless DC motors work smoothly and quietly

Servotechnic has released the Lin Engineering NEMA 17 Brushless DC (BLDC) motors. These motors are ideally suited for applications where high speed and high dynamic torque are a must for the user's application. The NEMA 17 BLDC's provide extremely quiet and smooth operation regardless of speed range, although the optimal performance speed range is 300rev/min to 3000rev/min.

These precision motors are also suitable for those who prefer velocity control with an analogue input, do not need holding torque and may be having reliability issues with an existing brushed DC motor.

BLDC's are also a good choice for applications that do not have a lot of power and require a higher efficiency motor.

The motors are available in four stack lengths: 40.894, 60.96, 81.026, and 100.076mm.

Depending upon the stack length, these motors are able to produce up to 0.7485243Nm of peak torque.

Applications for these motors include office equipment, packing machines, laboratory automation, robotics and HVAC.

Hinges Allow Temporary Positioning

Elesa has taken a new look at the humble hinge and now have a patent pending on the CFP hinge which has three pre-determined settings to allow fixed but temporary positioning of guards, doors, flaps or panels at 80, 120 or 170 degrees.

Each position is held by a simple click spring mechanism, ensuring that one-handed operation is easily achieved, keeping the panel in position for ease of access in installation or maintenance.
The 50mm CFP is manufactured in resistant technopolymer resin featuring front mounting bolt or screw fixing with clip on covers to provide a clean appearance and prevent build up of material in the bolt/screw heads.

Lenze Three-Phase Electric AC Motors

Lenze Group's robust three-phase asynchronous motor with integrated motec frequency inverter can be conveniently matched to the required machine or process parameters. The compact motor, which features a high degree of protection, can be networked via a fieldbus and the digital and analog I/Os used for open-loop or closed-loop control.

As a result, it offers a wider range of potential applications. Lenze takes care of the cabling for you by installing the inverter at the Lenze factory. The decentralised concept minimises the need for shielded cables and saves your money. Many applications of Lenze three-phase AC motors require extra terminals in addition to the power connections of the motor, e.g. for the separate fan, thermal contacts, brake, etc.

The universal terminal box of Lenze three-phase AC motors offers a very convenient solution without intricate lamp-wire connectors. The terminal box has been expanded to include a small mounting rail. Up to 18 terminals can be connected to this rail, and all applications are thus possible. In addition, it is possible to include the rectifier required by the brake. Lenze three-phase AC motors are robust and applicable to many industry sectors.

The compact design and universality make these motors suitable for most applications. Lenze three-phase AC motors are distinguished by their modular design, which includes a universal terminal box, the easy installation of incremental encoders and resolvers. It is also possible to attach BFK458 spring-operated brakes for various applications. This Lenze AC motor program is rounded off by matching frequency inverters and attachable gearboxes.

Lenze asynchronous motors of the series 13.710 are compact and space-saving. Available in a power range from 12 to 90 W, these Lenze Three-Phase AC Motors are naturally ventilated. Since they do not have a fan they have low noise emissions and can be applied in production areas with fluff or dust. The motors are available with solid shaft and keyway, with flange mounting and can be fitted with a brake.
