Triad SoC Delivers Embedded Mixed-Signal Solutions

Triad has announced a system-on-chip (SoC) that integrates the ARMR Cortext-M0 with the via-configurable analogue and digital functions needed to deliver embedded mixed-signal solutions. Triad's Mocha-1T array provides access to ARM 32-bit processing performance combined with silicon-proven via-configurable array (VCA) technology, allowing electronic-system designers to customise analogue and digital features with lower power consumption and greater system cost savings.

The Mocha-1 platform enables integration of complete mixed-signal SoCs by combining the Cortex-M0 processor, backed by the ARM development ecosystem, with Triad's VCA technology. Developers are able to integrate entire existing discrete PC board-level designs into the Mocha-1 platform. Triad's VCA technology combines silicon-proven analogue, digital, memory and microprocessor resources on a single ASIC die.

All of the resources on a VCA are configured by placing vias within a global-routing fabric. Vias are placed on the VCA using Triad's analogue-aware, via-only automatic place-and-route software, which configures and interconnects the entire VCA without the need for full-custom manual layout.

Triad's Mocha-1 integrates a Cortex-M0 32-bit processor running at 25MHz with 32KB of EEPROM memory, 24KB of SRAM, 75,000 gates of user-configurable logic and a selection of analogue resources including op-amps, DACs, ADCs, resistors, capacitors, transistors and switches. Combining the Cortex-M0 with these configurable analogue and digital resources allows Mocha-1 to realise a range of single-chip, mixed-signal SoC solutions for industrial, medical, sensor, Bluetooth low-energy and military/aerospace applications.

AIS PC Solutions Have Embedded Intel Architecture

American Industrial Systems (AIS) has introduced a line of industrial Panel PC solutions featuring embedded Intel architecture and Windows embedded operating systems. The solutions have been designed to meet a variety of applications, including control automation, HMI, heating-ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) control, military, marine, transportation, digital signage and medical industries.

AIS has combined LCD Technology with the latest embedded platforms to create solutions including medical tablet PCs, military rack-mount panel computers, marine panel PCs, digital-signage engines, rugged vehicle PCs, touch POS Systems, access-management systems, HMI touch systems and standard industrial panel PCs. These off-the-shelf products are highly ruggedised and utilise industrial-grade components to guarantee the high reliability and life cycle. Several enhancement technologies are utilised, such as MIL-810F.

Features include: stock/vibration compliance, wide temperature-range operation, IP65 water/dustproof rating, anti-corrosion coatings, sunlight readability enhancements and touch-screen integration. At the heart of the systems are Intel processors, including the Atom and Core 2 Duo Processors that feature high performance and low power consumption (Atom) to energy-conservation standards.

Axiomtek Releases 3.5in Intel Atom Embedded Board

Axiomtek has launched a powerful 3.5in (8.9cm) Intel Atom embedded board, expanding its Atom embedded solution. The SBC84832 embedded SBC uses the Intel Atom N270 processor combined with the Intel 945GSE chipset and ICH7M Southbridge, which offers optimised power and a robust performance per watt for cost-effective embedded solutions. The onboard 1.60GHz Intel Atom N270 processor is claimed to provide good performance with low power consumption and fanless operation. The Mobile Intel 945GSE Express chipset comes with the Generation 3.5 Intel Integrated Graphics Engine and the Intel GMA 950, which provides enhanced graphics support over the previous-generation graphics and memory controller hubs.

Moreover, the SBC84832 supports CRT (2,048 x 1,536) and LVDS LCD (1,600 x 1,200) dual-view displays and delivers flexible high-bandwidth expansion capability with one PCI Express mini card for custom system configurations. The small-footprint embedded board provides a solution for digital signage, kiosks, point of sale (POS), thin clients, digital security and industrial control. One DDR2 SODIMM on board implements up to 2Gb of system memory. The SBC84832 platform comes with advanced connectivity and expansion interfaces, including two powered COM ports (RS-232), six high-speed USB 2.0 ports, dual-gigabit local-area-network (LAN) ports, one Compactflash Type-II socket, a PS/2 keyboard and mouse, AC'97 Codec audio, two SATA-150 ports and digital input/output (I/O).

Two highly integrated Realtek RTL8111B 10/100/1000 Ethernet controllers feature remote wake-up functions to increase cost efficiency in network maintenance and management. A watchdog timer is included to keep the system running smoothly. Joseph Chou, product manager of the company's Embedded Computing business unit, said: 'Axiomtek has expanded its range of single-board computers with the launch of several new embedded boards based on the energy-efficient Intel Atom processors. 'Axiomtek's SBC84832 is a small-footprint single-board computer that is configured with the Intel Atom N270 processor at 1.60GHz, FSB 533MHz and the Mobile Intel 945GSE Express chipset with the ICH7M,' he added. The SBC84832 is RoHS compliant and is available now.

NI Launches EVS-1464RT Embedded Vision System

National Instruments (NI) has released an embedded vision system that gives manufacturing engineers and system integrators the ability to build high-speed real-time machine vision systems. These machine vision systems can be built for applications such as sorting products, verifying assembly and inspecting packaging. The NI EVS-1464RT embedded vision system is a high-performance, multi-core controller capable of processing images from multiple IEEE 1394 and GigE Vision cameras.

Additionally, the EVS-1464RT features an extended temperature range, a real-time operating system, a solid-state hard drive and a fanless design, making it suitable for use in harsh industrial environments. Ivan Meissner, general manager of Qualimatest Technologies, said: 'In our industrial inspection machines, we prefer embedded devices with real-time operating systems because they are dependable and often do not require IT department intervention. 'By standardising on the NI embedded vision system, we are able to achieve the multi-core performance of an industrial PC with the reliability and security of a real-time embedded system,' he added.

The EVS-1464RT features a variety of camera connectivity options so engineers can use many different types of cameras to perform simultaneous inspections, ranging from high-resolution area scan to high-speed line scan and from colour to infrared. It also includes a range of digital input/output (I/O) and industrial communication options that make it possible for the system to communicate and integrate with automation devices such as programmable automation controllers, programmable logic controllers, human machine interfaces, sensors and actuators to perform faster inspections.

The EVS-1464RT can be configured with NI Vision Builder for Automated Inspection (AI): an interactive software environment for building, benchmarking and deploying machine vision applications without programming. With this menu-driven software, engineers can build complex machine vision applications that not only incorporate image-processing algorithms but also advanced decision making with looping and branching using the built-in state diagram editor.

For more advanced applications, the EVS-1464RT can also integrate with the NI Labview graphical system design software and the NI Vision Development Module, which is a comprehensive library of image-processing functions. As both software packages work with all NI vision hardware, engineers can manage and maintain multiple hardware systems, choose the appropriate hardware for new applications and switch between both software options with minimal effort, according to the company.
