First Trace Updates Document-Management Software

First Trace has brought out version 4.2 of its Kinnosa service-oriented architecture (SOA). Kinnosa 4.2 includes support and direct integration for 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows 7, Autocad 2010, Solidworks 2010 and Microstation V8i Select 1. An advanced active directory adapter provides secure single sign-on (SSO) capabilities for fast implementation. Kinnosa 4.2 provides integration to MS Office document properties to dynamically link business data to Office documents and the open Kinnosa repository.

First Trace developed Kinnosa to address the complex requirements of engineering to effectively manage CAD drawings, engineering files and standard office documents in a real-time environment. The additional support for the 2010 versions of the most popular CAD tools means Kinnosa now directly integrates with Autocad versions 2007 - 2010, Solidworks 2007 - 2010 and Microstation V8 - V8i Select 1. The ability to dynamically link business data to Office documents and the open Kinnosa repository allows users to make business decisions based on data in documents without having to open them.

Any changes a user makes to data are automatically reflected in the document and the Kinnosa repository, regardless of where the change is made. Kinnosa's SOA has been extended with the release of version 4.2 to allow for more user choices and greater system flexibility. The extended SOA allows Kinnosa to be easily configured by system administrators, with improved user-management capabilities and greater granularity with role-based authorisations.

Software Increases Machine-Tool Accuracy

Heidenhain has introduced Kinematicsopt software, which compensates for the effects of rotary table/swivel-head spatial error and for geometrical positioning and component error in machine axes. The developments are expected to have a significant impact on multi-axis machining applications - in particular, eliminating relatively long and complicated set-up times for complex, extended-cycle workpieces subjected to five-axis machining.

Using a Heidenhain touch probe, the new Kinematicsopt software will automatically measure a machine's rotary axes - whether rotary table, tilting table or swivel head - thus providing users with a quick, easy-to-use fixed cycle that will ensure machine positioning is consistently accurate. Regular use of the five-minute cycle will therefore provide users with an automatic route to check axis positioning and to adjust accordingly.

From the measured values, the Heidenhain TNC control system will calculate static tilting accuracy and the software will automatically minimise any resulting spatial error. At the end of the measurement process, the system will automatically store the appropriate machine geometry in the respective kinematics table or signal an alarm if the measured deviation is beyond a preset limit.

Trumpf Software Raises Press Brake Productivity

Trumpf has announced that the latest software release for the Trubend series 5000 press brakes has the potential to reduce piece part costs significantly. A video on the company's website illustrates the claim. On a split screen, a box part measuring 1,000 x 600 x 1.5mm is produced simultaneously on a Trubend running the new TASC 6000 v6 software and also its forerunner, v5.2.

Both screens show the operator making 10 bends at three stations, but the new software allows him to complete the task 24 per cent faster. Instead of taking two minutes and eight seconds, the process takes one minute and 36 seconds. Trumpf said several features contribute to this performance. An automatic step control allows the back gauge finger to move automatically in a raised position and with maximum speed to the programmed position.

The back gauge also moves in parallel with the press beam to reduce cycle time and increase productivity. Additionally, press beam travel and adjustment for crowning now happen simultaneously and the Bendguard safety system works uninterrupted in box mode. The box height is pre-programmed and the press beam is therefore able to get into position at speed. Trumpf said the software also provides operation data recording for production control, maintenance planning and cost analysis.

Mettler Toledo Upgrades Melting-Point Software

Mettler Toledo has launched the latest software upgrade - version 1.1 - for the MP Excellence melting-point system range. Features of the upgraded software include: GMP compliant access control - password protection and user groups; continuous temperature display in exported video; additional languages available; network storage - direct transfer of files; intermediate results can be saved after stopping analysis.

The Excellence melting-point systems are said to enable fast and accurate determination of a melting point or melting range. The instrument is said to be easy to use, with a design that means only one click is needed to run a melting-point determination. All models are supported with high-resolution video recordings.

Fleetmatics Software Manages Field-Based Engineers

Fleetmatics has released its Field Service Manager software in the UK. Field Service Manager gives businesses in the plumbing, heating, air conditioning, refrigeration and other service-engineering sectors a solution that allows service departments to better manage field-based engineers by automating service-call management, job dispatch, signature capture and invoicing through one easy-to-use integrated system.

According to industry analyst Gartner, the percentage of technicians with wireless access to formal packaged field-service management solutions will increase from 12 to 40 per cent over the next two years. Field Service Manager allows field-service departments to increase visibility and productivity, reduce overheads, ensure faster receipt of payment and increase customer satisfaction by enabling engineers to complete multiple (and often complex) forms relating to a specific job on a smartphone, PDA or other mobile device.

Field Service Manager uses the GPRS network and allows multiple job forms to sit on the device itself, which means that even when an engineer is out of network range they can continue to complete the form and send it back to their service department once they are back online. Derek Bryan, sales director at Fleetmatics, said: 'Our product allows engineers to get on with the job and complete the necessary forms regardless of whether they are online or not. 'This is critical for companies where service engineers are down in basements, in lift shafts or where network coverage is patchy - it means job processing does not stop even when the mobile network is down,' he added.

Field Service Manager sits as a software application on any hand-held mobile device that runs on Windows Mobile 6 or Google Android. It operates by connecting to the service department's back-office system via GPRS. This back-office system appears as a dashboard to the service department and is accessible through a web portal. From the dashboard, customer jobs are logged and issued to the engineers.

Once received and completed, the engineer then completes the relevant forms about the job via their mobile device and sends the information back to the service department so that it can be invoiced straight after the job has been completed. Field Service Manager is designed and sold using cloud (on-demand) computing. Customers pay a monthly subscription and the service is completely flexible, putting the customer in control. This software as a service (SaaS) model now makes software solutions available to businesses of all sizes.

M And P Launches SO Analyzer Rev 4.0 Software

M And P has introduced the SO Analyzer Rev 4.0 software, which supports up to four Vibpilot devices with a total of 32 input channels, eight sources and high-speed tacho counters. Vibpilot is the company's portable, fanless four- or eight-channel front end with 24-bit resolution and USB 2.0 interfacing. Devices are synchronised via a master clock with no loss of measurement performance across multiple units.

Software enhancements include temperature logging and dynamic measurements. National Instruments' 9211 four-channel or 9213 16-channel thermocouple input modules can be used in conjunction with any of the other SO Analyzer-supported dynamic acquisition hardware to record thermal conditions while gathering dynamic data.

The user interface has been revised and adapted to the latest Windows themes and styles. Tools have been added to allow the user to personalise his or her functionality to best suit the common applications being performed. The SO Analyzer now provides unlimited throughput to the disc recording of time sample data, including the option of multiple scheduled recording. The SO Analyzer Rev 4.0 introduces various capabilities, such as an advanced modal testing functionality for GVT and network-based licensing for concurrent user access anywhere on the user network, with the added option of detachable licensing.

NEI Enhances Finite Element Analysis Software

NEI Software has announced that it will unveil the next generation of its NEI Works finite element analysis software at Solidworks World 2010 in California. NEI Works 2.1 includes enhancements and additional features that address a segment of the Solidworks community that requires Nastran for finite element analysis (FEA) solutions.

NEI Software's chief executive, David Weinberg, will be available to answer questions as the company demonstrates the enhancements and new features of NEI Works, including new post-processing features, usability enhancements and optimisation, as well as new types of analysis, elements and loads.

A full list of enhancements can be obtained on booth 633 or during the company's presentation at the Solidworks World 2010 Certified Partner theatre on 1 February. NEI Works 2.1 is embedded in Solidworks and has Gold Product status, a designation awarded by Solidworks Corporation for products that pass its tests for quality and compatible integration. NEI Works relies on NEI Nastran solvers and incorporates a number of advanced simulation technologies.

Raytheon Selects Windchill PLM Software

PTC has announced that Raytheon has placed an order to standardise on PTC's Windchill PLM software across the company as the cornerstone of its global product development management strategy. Raytheon, an aerospace and defence company, selected Windchill to replace its enterprise product data management system. Windchill enables Raytheon to create a common global collaborative environment for product design, development and production in support of its design anywhere, build anywhere, support anywhere business initiative.

The use of a single enterprise-wide PLM interface will enable the company to quickly deliver new products to market. Windchill can help standardise common product development processes including change and configuration management, streamline product data and workflows, and provide immediate access to product information across the organisation. The software provides advanced search capabilities to support data reuse that can drive a more streamlined product development process.

Wonderware Names Longwatch As Software Partner

Wonderware has named Longwatch, a supplier of video monitoring hardware and software products, as a certified software provider. Wonderware software partner products are endorsed or certified by Wonderware to be applications with proven compatibility with Wonderware software. Certified software partners have access to Wonderware Beta programs, toolkits and senior technical support so they can integrate and extend Wonderware software on an ongoing basis.

The Longwatch video surveillance system has been integrated with Wonderware's Intouch HMI, Active Factory, Historian and MES software in several applications. The combination of Wonderware software and Longwatch video systems allows operators in process control applications to see live and archived video from the plant floor directly on their Wonderware HMI screens. This allows operators to 'see' what is going on in a process plant or factory without having to send someone to the scene. The operator can also 'rewind' the video to see what happened a few seconds or a few hours before an incident.

By integrating with the Wonderware Activefactory trend chart object, Longwatch Video Historian software simultaneously shows trend graphs of user-selected variables (displayed as colour 'pen' lines) with archived video. The video panel and trend chart can be 'linked' (synchronised) with the click of a button on the viewer display. When the user clicks and drags the chart object's time cursor (normally used only for displaying the process variable's engineering units value and status at a selected point in time), the Video Historian also moves the video forward or backward accordingly.

Laidler To Launch Updated Risk Management Software

Laidler Associates will launch the latest version of its Risk Management software system on Stand 10 at Health and Safety 2010 - South. The software gives up-to-the-minute guidance on risk assessments for the working environment, CE marking to the Machinery Directive and Puwer 98.

The Risk Management software system simplifies and speeds the process of assessment, as well as ensuring that no vital steps are missed. The latest version has been updated to cover the requirements of the new Machinery Directive, 2006/42/EC, compliance with which became mandatory on 29 December 2009. Other enhancements include an option for users to decide whether they work to ISO EN 13849-1 or EN954-1 for the safety of machinery and an on-disk copy of the Health and Safety Executive's new Puwer Approved Code of Practice.

The software covers Puwer 98 requirements and CE marking for machines. However, it can be readily expanded with extra modules to suit the needs of individual users. All modules guide the user through the steps necessary for compliance using a question-and-answer approach that ensures every step is properly completed.

The modules then generate detailed reports in a uniform format, thereby making it simple to fully document risk-assessment processes and, in the case of CE marking, to produce the technical files. If non-compliances are found, a 'to-do' list is created, listing items in order of risk. The system also allows the user to store reports electronically.

The new version of the company's Risk Management software system runs on Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 on almost any PC. Laidler Associates has announced a series of free access training dates for 2010. Machinery safety workshops, covering the new Machinery Directive, will take place on 13 April in Newbury; 29 June in Solihull; 19 October in Scotland; and 16 November in Bolton.

PAS To Fit Alarm Software At Scottish Power Plants

Scottish Power has selected PAS's alarm-management and control performance software and services for 12 sites comprising gas-fired, coal-fired and hydro-electric power-generation stations.

Under the contract, PAS engineers will assess the performance of alarm-management systems and control loops and develop improvement plans for each individual plant. PAS will also install its Plantstate Suite software at all sites, which will provide comprehensive alarm-management and control performance functionality to facilitate the assessment and improve the performance of Scottish Power's systems.

Upon completion of the project, Scottish Power will continue to utilise Plantstate Suite to monitor and sustain the improvements.

GE Introduces IGS Drivers For Proficy Software

GE Intelligent Platforms has announced the availability of Industrial Gateway Server (IGS) 7.5 drivers for its Proficy software. This offering, utilising industry-standard Kepware KEPServerEX and driver technology, includes more than 100 protocols, which enables connectivity to thousands of different control hardware and instruments. Several of the connectivity solutions support vertical industry-specific hardware.

A single IGS 7.5 instance allows customers to connect to a variety of devices, IGS 7.5 provides users with an opportunity to consolidate information from different control hardware and instruments to visualise, control, analyse and optimise via connected Proficy HMI/Scada, MES, EMI or Workflow software. It is optimised to use the maximum possible speed supported by the devices with built-in diagnostics for communication errors and complete browsing functionality into devices.

This connectivity solution allows customers to manage operations from a more complete perspective, allowing them to process various data points and correlate multiple process indicators. IGS 7.5 provides robust connectivity through the latest OPC DA standards and also comes with a native Proficy Ifix interface that takes speed and reliability further. It goes beyond Proficy Ifix HMI/Scada solutions and can be used with the entire Proficy software portfolio, such as Proficy Cimplicity, Workflow, Plant Applications and Historian.

The native interface into the Proficy Ifix software is another feature of this driver. The enhanced IGS 7.5 application supports remote and offline configuration options without disrupting communications. Existing customers can upgrade to the enhanced IGS 7.5 and access all the latest added device connectivity options quickly. GE's ongoing work with Kepware keeps the product in tune with technology changes and connections to newer devices.

ESI Releases Visual-Environment 5.5 Software Suite

ESI Group has unveiled the latest release of its Visual-Environment 5.5 integrated suite of collaborative solutions. Visual-Environment offers a flexible and open engineering framework where applications and interfaces covering multiple simulation domains can be implemented. This latest release features a number of new features, addressing specific requirements for the automotive industry. Among these are a rapid Model Checker, a Barrier Positioning tool and a Model Compare function.

The latter - offered in Visual-Crash PAM and Visual-Crash DYNA, dedicated environments for crash simulation - is a tool used to compare two iterated models and to identify variations on the basis of set criteria (ID, name, area, volume, mass and properties). The differences can then be visualised and copied from one model to another. This amounts to a gain in time and efficiency as engineers no longer need to browse iteration data manually, according to the company.

Mansour Mirdamadi, senior engineering leader at Dow Automotive Systems, said: 'Dow uses Visual-Crash DYNA to develop and deliver innovative solutions. 'The model browser and compare tool in the latest release, 5.5, allows our engineers to obtain multiple versions of LS-DYNA input decks, identifying changes made to the full vehicle model rapidly, thereby helping us deliver optimised products to our customers,' added Mirdamadi.

Visual-Environment 5.5 also includes improvements to existing applications such as Visual-Viewer for injury report, in line with new US NCAP vehicle safety regulations. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has updated the US NCAP rating programme, including changed injury criteria and additional tests.

This new rating will apply to vehicles built in 2010 onwards, based on a new overall vehicle safety score combining front, side and rollover programmes. The animation speed within Visual-Viewer has been adapted to meet increasing performance targets, true batch-mode execution is now fully supported and the usability of plot windows is improved. The differences in contour values between two models can be checked using Model Compare.

Version 5.5 extends the capacity to interface with different ESI software solutions within Visual-Environment as it now provides an integrated environment for composite and electromagnetic simulations: Visual-Composites for composite structure manufacturing, in response to an increasing use of composite materials; and Visual-CEM for virtual electromagnetic testing, with a focus on the full 3D modelling of metallic structures animated by external plane waves (a computation of radar cross sections, for instance).

Tera Releases Quickfield 5.7 Simulation Software

Tera Analysis has introduced Version 5.7 of its Quickfield simulation software, which enables users to carry out transient non-linear electric simulation. Many advanced applications related to electrical insulation and high-voltage equipment design utilise the effects of non-linear dependency between the dielectric material properties and electric field strength. It is especially important when the electric field sources vary with time and this transient field propagates across dielectrics.

Previous versions of Quickfield have neglected all these effects in electric field simulations, according to the company. In the past, users had to choose from electrostatics, DC conduction or AC conduction formulations with constant parameters of all dielectrics. However, it is now possible to solve full-scale transient problems with dielectric materials, having field-dependent non-linear permitivities and conductivities.

This new problem formulation may be used to study the field distribution in objects subjected to pulse sources, such as lightning-induced over-voltages. It may also be applied to design modern insulation constructions, which include non-linear field equalising elements, varistor over-voltage protection and other applications that involve zinc-oxide varistors, semi-conductive ceramics and similar materials.

The addition of one more transient non-linear module for electric simulations closes the gap in Quickfield's multiphysics functionality, as similar modules for magnetics and heat transfer simulation were introduced a long time ago. Quickfield is claimed to feature a simple user interface.

There are also new methods for window positioning; it is now possible to dock the Quickfield utility windows to any side of the main Quickfield window, resize them to a column or row and collate with tabs in any combination. Problem properties may now be viewed and edited in the new Problem Properties window, without the need to open the modal Problem Properties dialogue. All Quickfield component windows now feature individual toolbars with advanced controls and may be selected using bookmarks.

3D Measuring Software Available For Faro Gage

Faro and Aberlink have signed an agreement under which the Aberlink 3D software is available as an option for the Faro Gage. Aberlink 3D can now be employed with portable measuring arms and was designed around an intuitive user interface that creates an interactive 3D image of the component as it is measured.

The software package represents an intelligent measuring system that is able to automatically recognise and define the various features being measured. Software features developed specifically for Faro measuring arms ensure the on-screen image is always correctly orientated to match the measured part. Other innovations allow the arm to be used to control mouse functionality and the arm buttons to retake points and accept features.

High-speed scanning enables a standard fixed probe to be used to collect a high density of touch points using time- and distance-based point spacing.

MK Software Enables Guarding System Design

MK has introduced its Quickdesigner, a standalone software program that allows users to quickly design and layout an MK Guarding System to meet specific requirements. According to MK, Quickdesigner can reduce engineering time by over 80 per cent, as well as reducing order-processing and lead times. The software does not require use with licensed design programs but is compatible with popular CAD systems, allowing users to create STEP, IGES and JPEG files as needed.

Users can choose to design and build one panel at a time, clicking on each panel for modifications or to attach additional panels to complete the guarding system. A second option allows users to create the footprint of the guarding area and populate the footprint with the guarding required. With the third option, users import the equipment drawing to be guarded, specify the offsets between the guarding and the machine, and the program populates the area with the requisite guarding configuration.

The MK Guarding System is then shown in 2D and 3D models for added efficiency and visualisation. The program generates a complete bill of materials, including cut lists for extrusions and panels, parts lists, machining services required and all the necessary information for fabrication and assembly.

Vistagy Supplies FiberSIM Software To Shipbuilder

Vistagy has announced that SNSP has purchased FiberSIM composites-engineering software to design and manufacture composite hulls, hull spars and supports. SNSP has also purchased Vistagy professional services for training as well as on-site assistance in developing composites-design methodologies. The company will be using FiberSIM to design an 80m hull.

It will use the software to develop layup information and to automate ply information to be sent to cutting and laser positioning machines. Howaldtswerke-Deutsch Werft (HDW), a company of the Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, has also purchased FiberSIM software to design and manufacture parts for submarines made of advanced composite materials.

Mokate Saves Costs With Checkweigher Software

The installation of Ishida's new Ishida Data Capture System (IDCS) for checkweighers has delivered cost savings and production line optimisation at Polish coffee, tea and cocoa producer Mokate. The IDCS is a software solution that can help factory managers make decisions regarding investment in new packing machinery or changes to existing operations and procedures by visualising and indicating where cost savings - on the packing or processing line - can be made.

The system records data from every single pack weighed by an Ishida checkweigher (data from up to 100 checkweighers can be recorded by one IDCS) into a single secure database. The reports generated can indicate, for example, how much product is being given away in any given time period (per minute, hour, shift, week, month or year) or how often lines are not operating when they should. Mokate has two factories in Poland - in Zory, producing cappuccino, coffee, coffee drinks, cocoa and coffee creamer, and in Ustron, producing tea - along with two factories in the Czech Republic and distribution facilities in Slovakia, Hungary and Ukraine.

The company supplies coffee, tea and cocoa throughout Central and Eastern Europe and also exports to China. It is now also selling its cappuccino in Italy. Mokate has been using Ishida checkweighers, supplied via Fenix Systems, Ishida's agent in Poland, for several years. The availability of the IDCS offered additional advantages by enabling Mokate to more accurately monitor its entire packing operation in order to identify both potential problems and cost-saving opportunities. The company initially installed the IDCS on a single checkweigher for a three-month test period.

During its first day of operation, the software identified that a number of unplanned stoppages were longer than anticipated. The software also helped to evaluate reasons for packaging material losses. As a result, Mokate purchased a further 12 Ishida checkweighers with IDCS software and it has now retrofitted the IDCS to all existing checkweighers in its factories. The company has identified a number of key benefits of the IDCS; the software provides full online supervision of production lines, delivering detailed information on individual shifts, production volume, throughput and film consumption.

Centralised control eliminates operator errors during product setup. The IDCS also enables effective monitoring and control of the volumetric fillers by using the information from the checkweighers to adjust their filling rates and to ensure they are operating at maximum efficiency. The system is also able to identify and help resolve problems in other upstream machines such as mixers and feeders. One of the most noticeable savings that the IDCS has generated has been through its ability to control what had previously been an extensive loss of film during the packing process.

Each roll of film is weighed before it is put onto the machine and this information is fed into the IDCS. The system can then calculate the amount of film used to produce a particular number of sachets and highlight the amount of wastage through rejected packs or through film losses during machine adjustments. This information is also used to allow Mokate to control the thickness of the film. Ensuring that the correct amount of film is used maximises the number of packs that can be produced during each production run.

The IDCS provides detailed reports that can be accessed at each factory or from another location via the internet. According to Mokate, the system has generated notable production efficiency and operator improvements, with better overall control and monitoring, meaning that problems can be dealt with more quickly.
