Schott Exhibits Pictures By PC Software For Design

Schott Systeme will be using the Metav exhibition in Dusseldorf to showcase the latest version of its Pictures by PC software for design and machining. This latest release is to include numerous additions to the company's existing full machine-simulation module. By displaying machining directly from generated NC code, this visualisation of milling as it occurs on the shop floor helps to eliminate errors in damaged parts, fixtures and machine crashes.

New additions to this module will include improved collision detection of the machine head against the part and table. The Arix V450 five-axis machining centre will also be added to Schott's available machines. The latest version of Pictures by PCs integrated hybrid surface, solid and mesh modelling tools will also be presented at Metav. Improvements in this area will see the core modeller itself being updated to provide a more tolerant environment for the construction and repair of complex solid and surface components.

To compliment this, customers having to work with scanned or STL data will have access to a suite of tools to aid the analysis, repair and modification of mesh models. Schott Systeme is put a price freeze on its complete CAD/CAM solution. The company will maintain its policy of offering free technical support without the need to purchase a yearly maintenance contract.

MK Software Enables Guarding System Design

MK has introduced its Quickdesigner, a standalone software program that allows users to quickly design and layout an MK Guarding System to meet specific requirements. According to MK, Quickdesigner can reduce engineering time by over 80 per cent, as well as reducing order-processing and lead times. The software does not require use with licensed design programs but is compatible with popular CAD systems, allowing users to create STEP, IGES and JPEG files as needed.

Users can choose to design and build one panel at a time, clicking on each panel for modifications or to attach additional panels to complete the guarding system. A second option allows users to create the footprint of the guarding area and populate the footprint with the guarding required. With the third option, users import the equipment drawing to be guarded, specify the offsets between the guarding and the machine, and the program populates the area with the requisite guarding configuration.

The MK Guarding System is then shown in 2D and 3D models for added efficiency and visualisation. The program generates a complete bill of materials, including cut lists for extrusions and panels, parts lists, machining services required and all the necessary information for fabrication and assembly.

Cadence Improves Virtuoso IC Design Platform

Cadence Design Systems has announced performance, capacity and usability enhancements to its Virtuoso IC design platform. The improvements in Virtuoso IC6.1.4 are said to reduce overall design time while ensuring quality production ICs. This is said to benefit design teams working along the full spectrum of design complexity, from the most advanced-node designs to more traditional chips. The Virtuoso release has been extended to work efficiently at advanced nodes down to 28nm and now supports 64-bit processing for improved capacity and performance.

The Virtuoso Space-Based Router has been integrated into the Virtuoso Layout Suite cockpit, making it easier to access. It now provides design teams a single common router they can use from start to finish to help ensure consistent results. Additional time-saving, quality-enhancing updates have been made to the Virtuoso Analog Design Environment XL, and Cadence design constraints technology. Integrating the Virtuoso Space-Based Router into the Virtuoso Layout Suite brings the power of a net-capable router to the desk of every layout engineer.

Interactive wire editing and full chip automatic finish routing share the same algorithms, providing a flow for a higher quality of design, from IP module creation though full chip sign-off. Improvements to the Virtuoso Analog Design Environment XL include display capabilities within the product that can now produce more and better datasheets. The Virtuoso Analog Design Environment's ability to analyse multiple tests simultaneously, including those across corner and statistical variations, helps engineers pick the best circuit design directions early on and verify those choices efficiently post implementation.

The Cadence design constraints methodology, which can help engineers reduce layout optimisation and design refinement times by as much as 20 per cent, received a boost in the new release, with enhancements that make it easier to add design constraints. In addition, there are new design constraints specifically geared to address sub-45nm design yield challenges. The release extends the Cadence ExpressPcells capability to support multiple-user sites.

Now customers can use their vast libraries of Skill-parameterised cells anywhere and see up to an eight times performance improvement. Cadence also improved the analogue display technology to handle multi-gigabyte waveform files more efficiently. The company has removed the two-gigabyte limit on waveform databases to account for today's larger, more complex designs. Performance has also been boosted for underlying design rule engines.

Vistagy Develops Seat Design Software

Vistagy has announced the release of Seat Design Environment 2009 (SDE), which provides an accurate 3D master model of the trim cover from the earliest stages of design to manufacturing. SDE enables seat cover manufacturers to bring flat patterns that have been altered with 2D editing software back into the 3D CAD model. This master model definition can be used to automatically update engineering and manufacturing data to create a faster, more precise process for delivering seat covers to market.

The traditional 2D-based seat trim cover design and manufacturing process requires a significant amount of translation and verbal communication to transfer data between numerous people and software packages. Creating documents, such as drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), cost assessments and sewing instructions, is a manual, error-prone task that requires frequent data re-entry. This traditional process is highly inefficient because there is no single master model containing all the most up-to-date information and, most importantly, there is no way to obtain timely design feedback.

Previous versions of SDE have always provided a way for data and documentation, such as flat patterns, costing information, sew reports and BOMs, to be automatically created from a 3D CAD master model. SDE 2009 enhances the master model by providing an environment integrated into commercial CAD systems where geometric and non-geometric information can be captured within a single 3D CAD model throughout the entire design process; from initial generation of flat patterns to final detail design as required for manufacturing. Now design and manufacturing engineers and their suppliers can efficiently create and modify seat trim cover product definitions and generate associated engineering data automatically for use throughout a company and its supply chain.

SDE 2009 also provides enhanced capabilities for communicating design information, generating documentation, simulating producibility and defining seat covers. Engineering as well as manufacturing drawings can now be created with SDE 2009. This includes the ability to show and hide cutouts in drawings on sewing reports and engineering drawings as well as the ability to highlight colours on sewing reports to show seam types in isometric and flat pattern views.

This improves the communication of the designer's intent to the manufacturing team, speeding overall development time and increasing accuracy. With improved display of producibility results, the simulation can be inspected and used to identify issues that need to be addressed to make better flat patterns more easily. There are now more options for creating attachments (by centre point and length, by start and end points, and by point and length) and for creating manufacturing sew lines (by curve, attachment or backing pad).

Q-Sys Provides Custom-Designed Motion Systems

Q-Sys offers a complete design-and-build service for all types of precision motion and positioning systems. Q-Sys aims to fill the gap between standard catalogue motion products and real-world applications. Instead of trying to create a solution for a complex motion task from components designed for mass production, Q-Sys enables engineers to obtain exactly what best suits their needs - bespoke, high-accuracy motion equipment.

By exploring the real requirements of the application, Q-Sys said its engineers can offer high-performance but cost-effective solutions to today's demanding motion systems needs. This may result in a custom design to directly meet the customer's specification. However, more often than not, the solution will use one or more elements from previous designs. These are carefully selected to ensure the most cost-effective solution.

The company said that this technique has proved successful, not only for one-off special-purpose systems, but also in producing the motion platforms for series production machines. This means large savings can be made by incorporating the motion hardware into the machine support frame.

Specialising in the application of linear motor technology, Q-Sys engineers have more than 40 years of collective experience in laser machining and cutting, digital holography, large-format inkjet printing, semiconductor wafer metrology and flat-panel display production, among other areas. The company has also worked with several synchrotron facilities to deliver a variety of custom motion and positioning solutions.

Pam-Comfort Helps Renault Design New Seat

Renault has used ESI's Pam-Comfort system for the preliminary design of a new seat. ESI's Pam-Comfort software offers a scalable and customised solution dedicated to virtual manufacturing and virtual testing (static and dynamic) of the soft parts of a seat. Virtual seat prototyping consists of several chained simulated steps ranging from seat manufacturing and occupant static seating, to occupied seat NVH (noise and vibration), where the stresses resulting from each step are needed for the next one.

The chaining is necessary to accurately predict the behaviour of the seats under numerous loading conditions (trimming, dummy loading, various human anthropometries and vibrations) and for various design changes (materials and shape). At Renault, where the full virtual seat prototyping methodology is being deployed, an important step after the preliminary design of a new seat is the virtual testing of the dynamic comfort performance using Pam-Comfort.

To accurately predict seat comfort, Renault runs a dynamic test of seat transmissibility with a static weight. The test helps evaluate the seat frequency response and thus informs Renault about how the seat contributes to the vertical acceleration filtering of the car, which is important for dynamic seat comfort. This test is used to improve and validate the seat design. Renault simulated this test procedure with a finite element calculation using Pam-Comfort. After completing the seat-manufacturing simulations, a dummy is imported in the model to launch the computation.

This calculation is divided in two phases: first, a static phase in which the dummy is seated and where the equilibrium is computed to precisely know the stress and strain states of the various parts of the seat; second is a dynamic phase in which a vertical acceleration signal is applied to the seat rail to obtain the seat dynamic transmissibility at the interface with the dummy. Computed results showed a good level of correlation with physical tests, therefore confirming the validity and predictability of both Renault's simulation modelling and the methodology applied.

EASIC In-A-Box Kits Make ASIC Design Accessible

EASIC has announced the availability of two ASIC-in-a-Box design kits that enable ASIC design to be widely accessible. Through simplifying the design flow, the design kits allow engineers who are unfamiliar with ASIC design to quickly complete designs. Nextreme ASICs are constructed to help simplify design, verification and silicon processing steps within the overall flow.

The ASIC-in-a-Box design kits provide software and documentation for completing and implementing Nextreme chip designs, and also deliver board design and debug guidelines for designing systems that incorporate Nextreme devices.

The kits contain: EASIC's eTools software suite that includes utilities for configuring PLLs/clocks, assigning pins/pads, generating memories and post-placement configuration; and DRC Magma DA's Blast RTL software for performing synthesis and placement; documentation and design tutorials to accelerate design implementation; JTAG programming cable for configuration and debug; and technical support website access. Designers can choose from one of two design kits.

ISL12057/8/9 RTCs Aid Design Of Utility E-Meters

Intersil has introduced three tiny razor-thin real-time clock (RTC) products that are ideal for low-voltage and portable applications. Intersil's ISL12057/8/9 devices simplify the design of utility E-Meters, multi-function printers, digital photo frames and many other devices. The smallest of these breakthrough products, the ISL12057 and ISL12058, require just 2 x 2mm, a 73 per cent reduction in board space against their closest competitors.

At only 0.55mm thick, these eight-lead devices are 45 per cent thinner than similar products on the market. The ISL12057 is available in a 2 x 2mm eight-lead uTDFN plastic package, which offers enhanced ruggedness and durability in portable applications. For added design versatility, the devices are also available in a 3 x 3mm eight-lead TDFN and popular MSOP and SOIC package choices. In addition, the ISL12058 offers package choices in the 2 x 2mm uTDFN, 3 x 3mm TDFN, eight-lead MSOP and eight-lead SOIC options.

The ISL12059 is available in the industry-standard SOIC package. With operation from 1.4 to 3.6V, these RTCs are ideally suited for battery-powered portable applications such as remote utility meters, copy/fax/scanner/printers, digital photo albums and hundreds of other applications. The real-time clock and calendar use an external 32.768kHz crystal that tracks time by date, year, month, week, hour, minute or second. Multiple selectable alarms allow a flexibility of alarm choices, with outputs for beepers or lights.

The calendar is accurate through 2099, with automatic leap-year correction. The two-wire I2C interface in the ISL12057/8/9 is widely used around the world, which simplifies design-in and enhances ease of manufacturability. The ISL12057/8/9 range of products is Pb-free (RoHS-compliant), pin, and software-compatible with legacy devices for easy design-in.

Open Design Alliance Updates ODA Platform

The Open Design Alliance (ODA) has released version 2.7.3 of the ODA platform, which delivers new features for DWGdirecta and DGNdirecta. Version 2.7.3 includes an expanded set of export capabilities, including HOOPS and STL (stereolithography) export support for DWGdirect. To take full advantage of existing export technology, DGNdirect has been adapted to share most of the export modules of DWGdirect, making PDF, SVG, STL and HOOPS exporting from DGN available to ODA members for the first time.

In addition to the expanded export offerings, version 2.7.3 also loads DWG files 20 per cent faster than previous releases and DXF loading and saving has also been significantly improved. In conjunction with this release, the ODA is opening new 'getting started' guides in wiki format to the CAD community for DWGdirect.

Neil Peterson, chief technical officer of the ODA, said: 'The solid core architecture of DWGdirect made it possible to adapt our existing DWGdirect export-modules to work for DGN in a straightforward manner, providing significant added value to our members with only a minimal amount of development work.' Version 2.7.3 of the ODA platform is available immediately at the Open Design Alliance's website for download by ODA members world-wide.

BSI To Hold Sustainable Design Conference

BSI British Standards will hold a sustainable design conference and an accompanying workshop, from 15-16 June 2009 at the CBI Conference Centre, London. As well as updating delegates on the latest sustainable design initiatives and the standards available to assist design processes, the conference includes practical case studies which illustrate how and where sustainability can be built into the design process.

The event will feature streamed sessions on four key design areas: product design, packaging, services and events, and communication and graphic design. Plenary sessions will explore how businesses can design sustainably in a recession, and provide clarification on terminology and metrics. Speakers include Martin Charter, director of the Centre for Sustainable Design and Chris Sherwin, head of innovation at Forum for the Future.

The pre-conference workshop, Design for Remanufacture, aims to enhance understanding of the remanufacturing process, and encourage the design of products and components which allow remanufacture. Delegates will also have the opportunity to take part in discussion sessions, and give their opinions on ways of educating and training designers and cross-sector co-operation. The conference price includes a copy of BS 8887-1:2006 Design for manufacture, assembly, disassembly and end-of-life processing (MADE).

Burkert Sets Up Design-And-Build Service

Burkert has set up an extended design-and-build service for high-tech, pre-assembled Microfluidic systems and custom-designed process control cabinets. Meeting the needs of applications such as food, beverage, process, chemical, pharmaceutical, medical/biomedical, water and oil and gas, the extended service combines process and laboratory automation, valve elements, sensors, flowmeters, water treatment systems and networked communications into single-source customised systems, which deliver higher process efficiency and higher yields with reduced waste.

Burkert's service involves complete project responsibility, from conception through design, manufacture, assembly and testing. It covers small and large production runs, extends to integration of third-party equipment, and offers the benefit of simplifying equipment designs, making them more competitive, more compact and easier to assemble.

Kontron To Design With Cavium Octeon II Processors

Kontron intends to design with Octeon II processors from Cavium Networks, a provider of semiconductor products that allow intelligent processing. Clients will be able to upgrade their systems with the highest packet processor performance, unprecedented scalability and added virtualisation functionalities, to support their multiple network infrastructure equipment such as media gateway- and wireless base station-type applications.

These multi-core processing units will provide much more flexibility in xTCA platforms, and create a broader range of target applications using COTS components in the network. Multiple 10GbE I/O capability combined with DDR3 memory bandwidth will enable system designs for LTE and other core network elements. SRIO is supported in the Octeon II CN63XX, so this type of architecture will also allow use in combination with other DSP-intensive applications in MicroTCA platforms.

The Cavium Networks Octeon II internet application processor (IAP) family is designed for hypernetworks serving enterprises, data centres, and access and service providers, which require support for converged data, voice and video. Octeon II applications include switches, routers, appliances, equipment for 3G, Wimax, LTE, wireless LAN, and unified storage systems and adapters. The Octeon II family integrates 1 to 32 MIPS64 cores, up to 75 application acceleration engines for quality of service, packet processing, TCP, compression, encryption, RAID, de-duplication and regular expression processing, up to 400Gbytes/s of DDR3 memory bandwidth, and up to 100Gbytes/s of network connectivity, while consuming only 2W to 60W across the entire family.

Kontron currently offers two modules: the Kontron AM4204 with four 1GbE ports to the front and software-configurable interfaces to the fabric side (PCIe, four 1GbE or XAUI), and the Kontron AM4220 with two 10GbE to the front and PCIe to the fabric side. Each one is designed with Octeon Plus CN5650 packet processors with 12 64-bit MIPS cores supporting up to 14.4 billion MIPS64 instructions per second (14.4 GOPS). They are designed with high-density, high-bandwidth serial IO technology, and are optimised for layer 4 to layer 7 data and security processing for 3G/4G BTS, RNC, xGSN and media gateway applications.

Schunk Intec Designs Three-Finger Centric Grippers

Schunk Intec has created the PZB-plus series of three-finger centric grippers with a central bore designed as a fitting. The central-bore feature is equipped with female threads for customer-specific add-ons and can be used as an ejector or to supply material. The PZB-plus can also be used to monitor the handling or assembly process with a camera system or to pick up workpieces and centre them using the fitting during the gripping process.

There are also threads integrated on the upper face of the gripper and on the cover plate to facilitate mounting customer-specific add-ons. The PZB-plus is available in two different stroke-length versions; the smaller stroke results in approximately double the gripping force. The six sizes, ranging from 64mm to 200mm, are fitted with multi-tooth guides, as is the case in the PGN-plus and PZN-plus ranges.

Compared with the PZB series, the PZB-plus can pick up 100 per cent-higher torques in directions at right angles to the gripping motion. This makes it possible to use smaller grippers than before, which allows the system to work more economically.

An optional gripping force safety device is available for the PZB-plus, working with an inner or outer lock. The position is monitored either via a magnetic switch or inductive proximity switch and the hose-free direct connection is claimed to simplify assembly and installation. The accessories available for the other '-plus' ranges will also be available for the PZB-plus series. This includes force measurement jaws, quick-change jaws, valves, sensors or jaw blanks.

SGS Completes LNG Design Verification

In just four months, SGS Industrial Services has completed the design verification of three cryogenic liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanks in accordance with Canadian code CSA Z276-01. Canaport LNG in Saint John, is a consortium between Irwing Oil, New Brunswick and Repsol, Spain, constructing the first LNG receiving and regasification terminal in Canada. After four years under construction, the Canaport LNG terminal should begin operations in the second quarter of 2009 and supply natural gas to the Canadian and American markets.

With its three large LNG cryogenic tanks, the first Canadian LNG terminal has a capacity of one billion cubic feet or 28 million cubic meters of natural gas per day and represents a capital investment of CAD750m (GBP413m). A project of this magnitude requires a strong international team in order for it to be completed in such a tight timescale. SGS Canada contributed to this success with its experienced team of engineers and professionals.

In four months, SGS succeeded in reviewing all tank design plans and verified them in accordance with CSA Z276-01, a code set up by the Canadian Standard Association concerning the production, storage and handling of liquid natural gas.

This CSA standard sets a range of 426 requirements and such a design verification project can generate around 40,000 pages of documents and drawings. Within three months, all the 426 requirements were matched with the concepts and drawings, calculations were verified as correct and the LNG tank design was confirmed as complying with the Canadian CSA standard. The final report was issued to the satisfaction of the customer, on time and on budget.

With the completely independent certification from SGS, Canaport LNG can be sure that the facility will operate as intended, using the latest technology, to the highest safety levels, and meeting all the relevant environmental standards and regulations. SGS Industrial Services provides not only design verification of LNG tanks, but also offers support services related to mechanical, piping, and electrical systems design, such as mechanical and process design review, fire and safety systems analysis, and instrumentation and automation analysis and review.

Novel Thermal Design Reduces Inverter Volume

Lenze 8200 Vector DrivesLenze has developed 8200 vector inverters using the 'cold plate' technique for cases where the inverter can be mounted directly onto a substantial heatsink. AC Tech (Lenze AG) 8200 Vector Inverters are available for power 0.55 to 90kW with three-phase supply. In the more popular smaller sizes up to 22kW, a space saving variant can reduce the requirement for panel space by up to 40%.

By dissipating the heat outside the cabinet, these 'cold plate' versions enable panels to have higher enclosure ratings. Alternatively a plate with external cooling by liquid or air can be used. The cold plate versions of the 8200 vector inverters have no heat fins, so heat generated is passed to the mounting plate and transmitted out of the cabinet.

In this way inverters require less mounting depth and the space savings are substantial. For a 1.5kW inverter the saving is 25%, rising to 40% for a 22kW inverter. Therefore panels can be smaller and costs reduced. As the heat is now transmitted to outside of the cabinet, requirements for a flow of cooling air through the cabinet are removed. Cabinets can be sealed and protection to IP65 is easier to achieve.

This is particularly advantageous in dusty conditions where any through flow of air would cause a dust build-up. Above 22kW the cold plate design is not available. However an alternative 'push-through' design can be used right up to 90kW. Here the Lenze Inverter Heatsink is mounted outside of the panel, gaining the advantages of panel space and enclosure as described. The concept of the 8200 vector frequency inverter is based on a modular system of complementary components.

Combined with a Lenze geared motor or a Lenze three-phase AC motor, it can be used to implement electronic variable speed drives for a multiplicity of applications. Compact: Side-by-side mounting saves space in the control cabinet. Integrated filters (optional) simplify installation. Flexible: The modular structure enables the inverters to be optimised for your application. This results in cost-effective but high-performance drive solutions. Whether as a "stand-alone" inverter with setpoint selection via potentiometer or a networked inverter with speed feedback in master/slave mode, the inverter functions can be adapted to suit every application.
