WEG Motor-Control Package For Oman Oil Field

WEG motor-control packages comprise low-maintenance motors, ruggedised CFW-09 inverter drives and direct-on-line (DOL) starting controls. These packages are helping En-Fab to achieve production targets in a major steam-injection recovery project undertaken to help Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) reverse Oman's declining oil production. En-Fab was contracted by PDO to design and install 100-million-BTU steam generators in the Omani oil field.

To date, WEG has delivered 34 motor-control systems to En-Fab to control multiple motors on the oilfield. Each system comprises WEG's CFW-09 Series variable frequency (VF) drives and customised control packages with direct-on-line (DOL) starting. This equipment helps run the main and booster pumps that supply water to the steam generators, as well as the large fans for combustion air to the burner assembly. En-Fab has requested other equipment vendors to supply two- and four-pole WEG motors on their equipment to complement the use of the WEG VF drives and controls.

'It's the ruggedness and the ability to operate at differing voltages and frequencies that has ensured the specification of WEG products for this project,' said Michael Smith, WEG's automation sales engineer. 'The WEG CFW-09 series of VF drives features Vectrue Technology and is among the world's most advanced technology for use with three-phase AC induction motors. He added: 'The series provides users with the benefits of software selectable V/F, sensorless vector and closed-loop vector (with encoder) control techniques in one product.

BNZ Oil-Water Cooler Has Extended Cooling Surface

The BNZ series oil-water cooler from JBJ Techniques features aluminium fins and a rigid tube stack. The company said advantages include an extended cooling surface, compact design, low pressure loss, integrated test ports, cooling capacity up to 500kW flow rate up to 850l/min.

The standard BNZ series offers four shells with available lengths of up to 2,200mm. Newcool also offers tailor-made solutions to the most arduous applications and according to customer specification. BNZ coolers are suitable for all industrial and marine environments.

Laser Lines Marks Code On Tiny Area Of Oil Seal

Laser Lines has recently marked a 10-character code on the outer ring of a customer's oil seal. At the 10.6 micron CO2 wavelength, rubber materials mark very well, but the unusual aspect of this mark was the size of the mark area on the outer ring: it measured only 1.25mm (0.049in) high. The marking set-up consisted of a Synrad laser, FH Flyer marking head and the Synrad Winmark Pro laser-marking software.

The FH Flyer head was equipped with an 80mm focusing lens that provides a 116-micron spot with a 0.8mm depth of field. To create legible text marks, the rule of thumb is that character height should be a minimum of seven-to-ten times the focused spot size. For this application, the character code was 1mm high, which is on the low-end of the range for an 80mm lens. To create this mark, the 'Simple' stroke font was selected, a text height of 1mm was set, 0.15mm of extra character spacing was added, and a text radius of 54mm was entered to match the curvature of the seal.

On the marking tab, power was set with a duty-cycle percentage equal to 10W; a velocity of 1016 millimetres per second was added, and the mark-passes property was set to four. By making four complete passes, the rubber surface is vaporised slowly in small increments, resulting in a cleaner, more distinct mark. The characters are well-formed; the engraved 1mm-high text can be easily read without magnifying aids. This small 10-character code, with four mark passes, was created in a cycle time of only 0.13 seconds per part.
