Optoisolator Delivers Up To 16kV Isolation At 2Mbd

Optek's new OPI1268 16kV high-voltage optical isolator, available via Pacer, delivers AC and DC voltage isolation up to 16kV while achieving digital data transmission rates of 2MBd. The OPI1268 UL-recognised high-voltage optoisolator is designed for power isolation in high-voltage PC board circuits in industrial electronics systems, medical electronic equipment and office machines.

The output IC detects the incoming optical signal and converts it to a proportionate current, which is fed through a high-gain linear amplifier and compensated for temperature, current and voltage, resulting in a stable digital output with an open collector inverter configuration. The OPI1268 optoisolator combines a high-efficiency gallium aluminium arsenide (GaAlAs) light-emitting diode (LED) with a peak wavelength of 850nm, optically coupled to a Photologic photodiode in the output IC.

Forward current (IF) is 10mA typical/50mA maximum, with typical propagation delays (tPHL-tPLH) less than or equal to 500ns. The creepage distance/air path is 0.970in (24.64mm) and the devices are UL recognised under file E58730. Packaged in an opaque high-dielectric plastic housing, the OPI1268 device measures 27.94 x 6.35 x 8.89mm and has a five-lead configuration (cathode, anode, Vcc, output and ground). The operating temperature range is from -40C to +100C. Data and samples are available now from Pacer.

Insert Couplings Provide Electrical Isolation

A series of silicone insert couplings from Sterling Instrument features electrical isolation and no backlash. These metric couplings, identified as the S54HSAM (clamp type) and S5PSAM (set screw type) Series, are stocked in five different bore sizes ranging from 6mm to 16mm. These couplings have aluminum hubs with either set screws or clamps for fastening to shafts.

The insert is silicone 40 ShA. Operating temperature ranges from -50C to +150C. They range in length from 26.5mm to 57mm and their maximum speed is 5,000rpm. The couplings can be used in various applications and are able to accommodate tight or skewed connections.
