James Walker Publishes Compression-Packings Guide

James Walker's compression-packings guide provides technical information for OEMs, design engineers, maintenance staff and procurement executives across all industrial sectors. It starts with a quick-reference chart that enables readers to scan swiftly through the complete range and select the most suitable products for specific application before referring to the full descriptions and technical specifications. The section on graphite-based fugitive emission control features packings such as the low-friction Supagraf Premier and Supagraf Control, which are both certified in valves to TA Luft/VDI 2440 standards and qualify as Best Available Technique products in line with the EU IPPC Directive.

Supagraf Premipak is a combination packing set for valves, based on two graphite materials that conform to Shell material specifications MESC SPE 85/203 and 85/204. This packing set is designed to reduce VOC emissions to better than 100ppm and has a working temperature range of -200 to 450C. Also new to the guide are Torrlid packings that hold a vacuum on the lids above crucibles of molten aluminium. These products readily withstand the temperatures and compressive forces involved, even after repeated opening and closing cycles.

Many compression packings in this publication are said to significantly reduce maintenance stockholding costs, as most length-form products can be used on different sizes of valves, centrifugal pumps and other rotary equipment, as well as reciprocating pumps and rams.

Materials range from highly developed Supagraf graphite and chemically inert Fluolion PTFE-based grades to hard-wearing aramid, glass and ramie fibres, and softer natural yarns. Products for static duties include the Tankatite range of sealing products for tank lids and hatches on marine tankers, and static or mobile tank containers. There are also very high-temperature packing grades for furnace doors and kilns. The compression-packings guide can be downloaded in PDF format from James Walker's website and is also available as a 36-page printed brochure.
