Diary Writing Isn't Just for Kids

Most of us women remember having a diary at some point during adolescence. Some girls kept up their diary writings for years, while for others it was just a brief fad. Girl's diaries were usually filled with girl stuff, writing about a trip, or a sleepover at your friends or that boy you liked. Keeping a diary was a way to keep your secret thoughts from prying eyes – like your brother! Remember the little key and latch? This was one thing that made the diary special and secret. You kept the key hidden away and when you wanted to make some entries, you'd use your key and off you went. Perhaps you still have your first diary. It might bring back some memories and give you a few laughs, too.

Why is it that diary writing should be just a kid's activity? When you grow up, diary writing is suddenly transformed into what's called journal writing or journal keeping. A daily written record of one's experiences. So there's really no difference between the two, just nomenclature. Yet few of us keep such a record any more.

What made it attractive as an adolescent? Everyone knows how important an issue privacy is, during the teen years. Diary writing was a way to express your private thoughts, without fear of embarrassment. Some kids would mull over a situation that hadn't quite gelled, with future entries and episodes on the same topic. When we felt angry, the diary accepted our thoughts, without rebuke. We vented on the pages of the diary.

Don't you remember something you didn't want to talk to your parents about, yet still felt compelled to write it down? Some of us were aspiring poets or writers, but wanted to give it a shot to see if we were any good. Once sure we had some talent, we might copy that poem on a separate sheet of paper and shyly, approach our Mom or best friend, for feedback.

The point is, although our ideas may become more sophisticated and thoughtful, the need to express ourselves lives on, long after adolescence. Whether you call it diary writing or journal writing, this private book of thoughts is essentially, good therapy. As adults, we often bite our tongues in social situations, even with our own families, in order to exhibit mature behavior or just to keep the peace.

This doesn't negate the thoughts and emotions. They just get stuffed down inside. Every one of us could benefit from diary writing. Give it a try!

What's The Secret of Beautiful Women?

Reality style TV shows have evolved over the years, beginning with dare-devil shows where contestants, gleaned from the ordinary population, are willing to do gross things, such as eating bugs or drinking raw ostrich eggs. These types of television productions were hugely popular, due mostly to the sensationalism. Viewers were intrigued to watch ordinary folks like themselves, doing things no one in their right mind would ever be able to stomach. Beautiful women were featured 'ordinary' contestants, along with handsome young men, promoting the 'beautiful people' culture in a sensationalist display the viewing public found titillating and entertaining.

When the luster began to fade from such programs, the networks began to refine their focus with surprise home makeovers and Moms switching households and exercising their own take on another family's lifestyle and discipline issues. Then came the updated version of dating games, with bachelors and bachelorettes gathering in palatial surroundings to find the mate of their dreams.
While these TV reality shows all ran their course, the public wanted more – but different and more imaginative takes on the lives of ordinary people.

Just recently, TV spots have been announcing a new type of reality TV show, airing now. The topic? Beautiful women. However, there's a twist. Evidently, the participants are given to understand that the bottom line is who is physically superior. The real agenda of the show is to determine which of these beautiful women has true beauty which is more than skin deep. The previews, promoting the show, have snippets of interviews with these beautiful women, stating their own views of their relative beauty on a scale of 1 to 10.

In the majority, the women appear to be highly narcissistic and shallow to boot. Many state that they are surely a 20, on the 1-10 scale. “Just look at me. Yes, I look in the mirror constantly and I like what I see. Wouldn't you agree?” The men are no better. At best, these people are caricatures of beauty.

Which brings us to the point of what makes beautiful women beautiful to the ordinary man? Bleached hair and overdone makeup doesn't seem to impress a regular guy as constituting the woman of his dreams. He's looking for other qualities that are more than skin deep. As far as the visual appeal, men really want a girl with a bit more refinement. The celebrity look only goes so far and doesn't last long. Men tend to associate the overdone celebrity with a personality that doesn't stand the test of time.

Men are perhaps more astute in their assessment of beautiful women than women might think! Sure, they enjoy a woman's physical appearance as much as the next guy. But when they're looking for a serious relationship, personality matters! Men do appreciate women of a generous, joyful and gentle spirit. In the eyes of most men, beautiful women are possessed of all of these qualities.

We can only wait to see how these reality show contestants fare. What's hard to figure is how they've been duped into thinking it's all about looks. Are they truly so conceited, or is it all a hype? In any case, it would be fun to root for a truly beautiful woman, who didn't rate herself a '20' on a scale of 1-10.

20 Minute Workout Required

Your Doc has said “Exercise!” The easiest way is a 20 minute workout to get and stay fit! We cannot read a magazine, watch television or visit our doctor without some smart aleck pointing out the virtues of regular exercise. We know they're right, but the very thought is anathema to a lot of people. Why we gasp in horror, mentally fleeing from the idea, is another question. It's really just simple psychology.

It's like a Mom enjoining her reluctant child to eat a few forkfuls of green beans.  My Mom spent quite a lot of time and effort at this healthful pursuit. I spent as much time rearranging those green beans so that they might not be visible on the plate. When I became a Mom, I did just what my Mom did, with my own daughter. The point is, that a 5 minute period of actually getting down to eating the beans stretched into, possibly hundreds of hours over a childhood. It's the same with exercise.

A diligent and consistent 20 minute workout takes how long? Just 20 minutes, once you begin. Most women spend at least that much time each morning with toiletries,  makeup and dressing.
Anyone can find 20 minutes to talk on their cellphone or kick back for a cup of coffee. So, when some authoritative person, like your doctor, has ordered you to exercise, or else, dispel those gruesome ideas of exercise torment and just get on with it. Here are some easy, painless and effective ways to crunch that 20 minute workout for all it's worth.

If you enjoy walking, you've got it in the bag. Choose a time of day that's convenient to your schedule and stick to it, unfailingly. Start off as slowly as you need to, gradually picking up the pace in a way that's comfortable and enjoyable. If you can get another family member or friend to join you, your 20 minute workout can do double duty as chat time. You'll do a world of good for your body, burn a few calories and have a good time doing it!

Your 20 minute workout can consist of anything where you're moving and using your muscles. Your custom 20 minute workout is most effective when you switch one day of walking with one day of doing sit-ups and another swimming or biking. The idea is to use all of your muscles in the course of a single week. Over time, sit-up day begins to show up on your tummy in positive ways. The one day you spend swimming or biking produces a nice toning of all your muscles and a notable disappearance of fat, always a good thing.

Maybe one day, your schedule is so tight and you simply can't bear to look at the accumulation of pet hair on the living room carpet. Use your 20 minute workout to give the vacuum the thrill of its life. Your arms, legs and back muscles will get a little toning, you won't have to look at Rover's fur on the floor and you've done your 20 minute workout. Mission accomplished.

Let's face it. Twenty minutes is not a long time. Fitting your 20 minute workout into all but the worst of bad hair days is doable. When you mentally falter, just think of the health conditions you may avoid by following the Doc's orders.
